50 years ago... Apollo 15 safely returned to Earth... August 7, 1971 after a 12 days 7 hours lunar spaceflight mission, the Apollo 15 crew was recovered in the North Pacific Ocean by USS Okinawa, greeted by Captain Huff & Rear Admiral Hayward. Note Apollo 15 commander David Scott was clearly wearing his 44 mm diameter Bulova 885104 prototype chronograph he had been wearing since the third lunar EVA at Hadley Rille. This means Scott wore the Bulova chronograph during the “Hammer & Feather” Galileo gravity field experiment, during the salute to the Stars & Stripes at the Hadley-Apennine lunar surface and while putting the memorial artwork “Fallen Astronaut” in the lunar soil. Worn outside the Apollo A7LB spacesuit, this Bulova chronograph worked flawlessly onboard the Lunar Rover in the dusty lunar environment. USS Okinawa - Apollo 15 Moon Book August 7, 1971 Apollo 15 Command Module Pilot (CMP) Alfred Worden is seen exciting the “Endeavour” Command module capsule after splash down in the North Pacific Ocean, after which the crew was recovered on board Navy carrier USS Okinawa. The book pictured is the official US Navy cruise book as USS Okinawa was the primary recovery ship. The Apollo 15 were the first to use a battery-powered Lunar Rover and the first to leave an artwork on the lunar surface, an Aluminium “Fallen Astronaut” figurine desinged by Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck and commemorated all astronauts & cosmonauts who died on a spaceflight mission up to 1971. August 2, 1971 Apollo 15 commander David Scott performed the “Hammer & Feather” Galileo gravity field experiment on the lunar surface. Galileo Galilei’s theory  states that all objects in a given gravity field fall at the same rate, regardless of mass, in abscence of aerodynamic drag. The heavy Geology hammer and the light Falcon feather hit the lunar surface at the same time. This popular science experiment was CapCom Joseph “Joe” Allen's idea, who later flew on space shuttle missions STS-5 and STS-51A. During the 4 hours 49 minutes lunar EVA, David Scott wore his Bulova 885104 prototype chronograph and later parked the Lunar Rover, placing a small “Fallen Astronaut” figurine in the lunar dust. This Aluminium artwork, made by Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck, commemorated all cosmonauts & astronauts who died in the pursuit of human spaceflight.
