RIP cosmonaut Vladimir Shatalov (1927-2021) June 15, 2021 Russian cosmonaut and former Director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre Vladimir Shatalov passed away aged 93… he flew on three spaceflight missions: Soyuz 4, 8 and 10. In 1971, during Soyuz 10 training, we see cosmonaut Shatalov was wearing a Rolex GMT-master 1675 pilot watch while his colleagues Yeliseyev & Rukavishnikov wore Russian Strela chronographs. A few year later in July 1973 and September 1974, NASA photos show that  Shatalov was still wearing his Rolex GMT-master pilot watch during ASTP-training at JSC Houston in the USA. (Photo: TASS)

December 8, 2021... a Richard Mille time piece in space. Soyuz MS-20 launched with Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Misurkin (3rd spaceflight) and two japanese space participants, 36 years old Yozo Hirano and 46 years old Yusaku Maezawa.  Both “Space tourists” travel via Soyuz & Space Adventures to the ISS... Besides the usual Omega Speedmaster chronograph, it looks like Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa wore a personal Richard Mille RM 27-02 Nadal version wristwatch. With thanks to the SWFG, as far as we know, the very first Richard Mille wrist watch in space! However, the record for the most expensive wrist watch remains the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak grande complication black chronograph worn by Canadian spaceflight participant Guy Laliberté during Soyuz TMA-16 in September 2009. June 16, 1963... First female spacefarer on Vostok-6 Tchaika mission ! The 26-year young Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova became the first female cosmonaut and the very first woman to fly in space. In the 1950, Tereshkova was employed as a textile worker but was a competitive parachutist at her local Aero club. Her skydiving experience was a requirement for female cosmonauts as potential cosmonauts had to have pilot and/or parachutist experience and be under 30 years of age. Tereshokova’s Vostok-6 mission lasted 2 days 22 hours and made 48 orbits around Earth. Note the little white-cream dial Shturmanskie pilot wristwatch strapped over the left forearm of her SK-series “Skafandr Kosmicheskiy” spacesuit. Alexei Leonov is also in the right photo. August 2, 1972 after retirement of NASA and the US Air Force, Apollo 15 Moonwalker James Irwin discussed his “High Flight” evangelical foundation to share the inspiration he received during the fourth Apollo lunar landing mission. The name "High Flight" was inspired by the famous aviator's poem by John Gillespie Magee, Jr., a copy of which was carried to the moon by Colonel James B. Irwin on the Apollo 15 lunar mission.
