Expansion of the Bernadotte School, Hellerup 2007 - 2009
The façade of the building is wired up as part of the landscaping and building design. Today Wisteria, Black Leaf Ivy, and Virginia Creeper filter daylight entering the building.
The Modern Seaweed house is a holiday home clad with seaweed pillows in Læsø, Denmark by Vandkunsten and Realdania.
OMG I am SO excited!!!! A seaweed house!!!! Apparently seaweed (eelgrass more precicely) is even fire resistant? On top of having most of the other good qualities that I’d have expected from such a natural fibre, like:
The Modern Seaweed House has shown that eelgrass has a lot of qualities. Besides its excellent insulating property and long-term durability, which in itself offer a lot of potential, it has been discovered through practical application that seaweed has exceptional acoustic properties. This creates surprisingly comfortable rooms while the ability to absorb and give off moisture contributes to regulate a good indoor climate. The numerous qualities provide a wide range of applications in modern, sustainable building.
And longlasting too! I was always in love with thatch, but that’s a super fire hazard and also doesn’t last that long. I wonder why eelgrass wasn’t more common for houses/thatching? Maybe it’s harder to work with because it’s shorter and not as uniform as thatch?

Sekundært byggeri opført i genbrugsmaterialer vinder indpas i byggebranchen.
