Maddie's Secret (dir. John Early) x SIFF 2026.
Early writes, produces, directs, and stars (in drag) as an outrageous online food influencer (or "recipe developer") suffering from a severe eating disorder in this entertaining queer comedy. As an earnest melodrama clearly inspired by 1990s made-for-TV movies, it uses its glossy cinematography to heighten the comedic effect of the sincere performances. The film is a fine cinematic example of choosing a hyper-specific aesthetic, mood, and style, then completely committing to the bit seriously. Early's extremely soapy brand of humour makes everything particularly appealing.
Screened at the 2026 Seattle International Film Festival as part of the New American Cinema program.
Screening at the Park Theatre from July 8-14 and Rio Theatre on July 9 & 12.
