Today, I experienced death. Not the death of a best friend, or the death of a family member, but the death of a girl that I had not yet had the opportunity of getting to know as deeply as I would have liked to. She was a best friend to someone who became my best friend this year, and I had learned a lot about who she was and what it was about her that was so absolutely radiant. I had met her just about a year ago this time in Corolla, North Carolina. Since then, I got to know her through Connor and what he would tell me about the memories he shared with her in high school, and their frequent phone calls to one another. I felt as if I had come to know her as well. On school breaks, I saw Vanessa at Connor's house on more than one occasion and I realized what a person she was.
Her passing last night is not something that is going unnoticed. Word spread like wildfire, and a vigil is already prepared for tomorrow night. I have talked with several people today about her, and the effects of her death and have confirmed my conclusion that this girl's life was vibrant and full of joy. I have yet to hear of or come across a single person who had a single bad thing to say about Vanessa. It's people like her that do not deserve to be taken away from this life so abruptly, when they have so much going for them.
Vanessa's death is haunting, in a way. Things like this happen on CSI, not in Northern Virginia. And certainly not to people I know. The only word to describe what is going on is surreal. I am wondering when I am going to wake up and see that none of this is real. It does not matter that I was not her best friend. It matters that I knew Vanessa, that many people knew her. And this is the first real REAL dose of reality I have had to deal with. I talked with one of my best friends today, trying to pinpoint exactly what we were feeling, and we discovered that we had a great deal of difficulty doing so. It shouldn't take an event like this to realize that we are growing up, but it has. Things are no longer all fun and jokes; reality sets in, and it sets in hard.
The life of a wonderful girl was stolen yesterday. The life of a girl with so much potential and so much to look forward to. The life of a girl that was not ready to have it taken away from her. The life of a girl just like any one of us.
May you sleep with the angels, Vanessa. No one was ready to let you go, but we will all learn to keep you with us every single day.
