Our turn for @inafieldofwhitelilies's #tilOnceMore countdown! Only 8 days left until GrimGrimoire is IN OUR HANDS and honestly we cannot wait. We decided to do a piece on the unsung hero of Lillet's quest, the ever-dependable elf, Gaff!

Here’s to 20 years of enduring and timeless flavor…

The zine is finally live! 22 artists and 5 writers worked super hard over the summer to bring you Vanilla Extract: A Vanillaware Tribute Anthology! Over 25 illustrations and 5 pieces of writing spread across Vanillaware’s 7 games— plus some bonus general content as well! The digital bundle is pay-what-you-want and it includes: 🔹 the Vanilla Extract 80-page zine itself, laid out in about 40 spreads 🔹 a bonus WIP zine full of sketches and concepts 🔹 5 pixel badges 🔹 5 discord emotes 🔹 5 mobile wallpapers 🔹 4 desktop wallpapers 🔹 4 printable bookmarks 🔹 & a coloring page!

The zine will be costed until OCTOBER 17th, with any and all proceeds going to The Trevor Project at the end of the sales period. After that, the zine will be made free to download as our treat for the 20th anniversary!

Spotlight: GrimGrimoire

GrimGrimoire is technically Vanillaware’s second game made, but it was the first released in Japan, published by NIS in April 2007 for the PlayStation 2. Set in the backdrop of a magical school locked in a time loop, GrimGrimoire is a combination of 2D visual novel and real-time strategy game, a gameplay style shared only with the later 13 Sentinels. The game’s protagonist Lillet Blan acquires a growing set of the titular tomes while trying to solve the mysteries of the school’s residents, her consistent looping, and the attempted theft of the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.

While somewhat buried over time, GrimGrimoire definitely left its mark. The colorful characters and summons are as fun as they are memorable, and its writing still feels sharp. GrimGrimoire is more than worth a play even if it’s not quite as successful as it’s contemporary, Odin Sphere.

EDIT: I'd confused the timeline between the Japan & America releases, GrimGrimoire was released first in Japan, but second in the US, coming out a month after Odin Sphere.

We’re almost to the end of the production period and today we have our wonderful cover reveal!

Our cover was done by our mod GameboyGamut on twitter, and we’re super excited to announce the release date. Our anthology on the ever enduring flavor of vanilla will be available for download SEPTEMBER 12th, once again, for pay what you want & with proceeds going to the Trevor project!
