the   air   was   thick   with   the   smell   of   burnt   rubber   and   gasoline,   headlights   slicing   through   the   miami   night   as   ares   gripped   the   wheel   of   his   Porsche 911 GT3 RS,   sweat   trickling   down   his   temple.   it   wasn't   his   cleanest   race—not   by   a   long   shot.   he'd   hit   the   corner   too   late   on   the   last   hairpin,   nearly   spinning   out,   and   julian's   obnoxious   laughter   echoed   in   his   mind   as   he   recovered.   the   nariza   bois   were   ruthless   tonight,   tailing   him   hard,   their   neon   underglows   practically   breathing   down   his   neck.    

then   it   happened— his   stroke   of   luck.   as   they   approached   the   final   straight,   one   of   the   bois'   clipped   another   car   in   the   pack,   triggering   a   chain   reaction   of   chaos   behind   him.   ares   didn't   look   back—he   didn’t   need   to.   he   floored   it,   the   GT3 RS's   engine   roaring   as   he   tore   through   the   finish   line.   the   sight   of   julian's   mangled   bumper   in   his   rearview   mirror   was   the   icing   on   the   cake.    

for   once,   luck   had   been   on   his   side,   but   ares   knew   better   than   to   count   on   it.   the   win   was   his,   but   so   was   the   nagging   feeling   that   it   could’ve   gone   the   other   way.   that   night,   as   the   rodani   prowlers   celebrated,   ares   couldn't   help   but   wonder— was   his   skill   slipping,   or   was   luck   starting   to   play   a   bigger   role   in   keeping   him   on   top ?

yes,  tania  wants  to  say,  sick  and  smug  satisfaction  coiling  in  their  stomach  like  a  tight  spring  waiting  to  be  unleashed.  it’s  true  enough.  but  there’s  something  else  that  sits  in  the  back  of  their  throat,  something  cloying  and  rotten,  something  that  has  them  pressing  their  mouth  into  a  thin  line.  maybe  it’s  the  look  on  heaven’s  face.  maybe  it’s  something  else.  what  do  you  say  when  you  win  a  race  but  lose  the  fight?  tania  grits  their  teeth.  the  tally  still  haunts  them.  “rematch,”  they  ground  out  at  last.  “let’s  go  again.  fastest  to  twenty.  see  who  wins  that  one.”  the  question  hangs  in  the  air  between  them,  still  unanswered.

the proximity used to be a blessing, made everything so easy. sloane had a taste of heaven and now she's fallen back to earth. it's cruel, how that beautiful, tragic face is inescapable. cruel, how those pretty, dark eyes refuse to look her way.

“you gonna act like i'm just a stranger?” sloane hasn't yet learned how to be an ex with grace. “don't i deserve at least a 'hello'?” and if not, then maybe an explanation for why things got broken off so abruptly; but sloane's not holding her breath for any actual answers.

         the bass from the club vibrated through the walls, an unrelenting pulse that matched the throb behind his eyes. hawk leaned against the railing outside, cigarette perched between his fingers like it was the only thing tethering him to the moment. the last thing he needed was company, & yet, there they were — too loud, too close, too much. his gaze dragged over them like a blade, sharp & dismissive.  ❛  you’re breathing really loud & it’s annoying me.  ❜
