i’m not going to offer any opinions about sagan apparently riding in to another rider on the kemmelberg in last sunday’s gent-wevelgem. i’m sure countless others have weighed in (i don’t really follow these things these days) and, in the end, shit happens in bike racing.
i did find the tweet from vantomme quoted here revealing and more than a little poignant:
“That's the life of a small cyclist.”
note that vantomme finished 11th... 11th place, otherwise known as “the placing no one sees because they only show the top 10 on television.”
it would be interesting to know if the incident adversely affected vantomme’s outcome in the race, or if it motivated him to ride up to his final placing.
anyway, here’s to small cyclists everywhere.
