Tues of AC Drives and Their Features or Drawbacks
We all have been using AC drives, but not many of us are aware of what this actually is and how they work and what are the types present in the markets. In this post, we look at different versions present in the markets. According to the experts, there are mainly three types currently being used in the markets and the names are –
Current Source Inversion (Csi)
Voltage Source Inversion (Vsi)
Pulse-Width Modulation (Pwm)
Let us take a quick tour of what these names area all about and the first one that goes under the scanner is the Current Source Inversion or CSI
Current Suource Inversion or Csi
According to those dealing in variable speed drives and vacon drives, etc., this version has successfully used in signal processing and industrial power applications.
The experts say that this is the only version that comes with the regenerative power capability.
This means that this version of AC drives come with the feature of absorbing power flow back from the motor into the power supply.
The biggest feature is that it can give a very clean current waveform, but require large, expensive inductors in their construction.
Moreover, it can cause clogging (pulsating movement during rotation) below 6 Hz.
Voltage Source Inversion or Vsi
According to those holding expertise in VSD electrical and suppliers of danfoss drives, the version has a poor power factor.
It is because of this reason; there are chances that it can cause motor cogging below 6 Hz.
One more point that needs a description here is that this version does not have regeneration capacity.
These are generally the reasons why both these versions of AC drives are not used and are not very popular.
Pulse-Width Modulation (Pwm)
This happens to be most used version present in the markets in fact that it comes with excellent input power factor.
This factor is there mainly because of fixed DC bus voltage, no motor cogging, higher efficiencies, and lower cost.
