Well, when he and Magda finally settled, no one in town was really nice to them.

Magda's bright red hair which had been forcefully taken from her was still mostly gone, and the women teased her. And the fact that she and Erik were both so thin terrified the children. 

But one woman, this big, buff looking Russian woman, she was nice to them, gave them food and shelter, had her husband hire Erik. 

But she died the year Anya was born.

And because of antiziganism, someone in town claimed Magda had cursed the woman.

And that's how, four years later, when people figured out Erik was a mutant...What happened happened.
