He’d nearly lost track of how long he’d been walking as he sought out other signs of life. A weariness had settled upon Kaneki’s mind as he continued on, a resignation to his fate. Once there would have been a time where such would have seemed impossible, yet his life had lain all too full of tragedies since days of his childhood, only growing more numerous after his encounter with Rize. This was simply another tragedy - one of which he would survive for the sake of his family and friends. If they had all survived the raid, if they’d managed to escape - they would be waiting for him. He had to believe in that, otherwise he might have fallen back to his previous state of mind. He would live. It would be some time until hunger would come to tear at his stomach ( one of the few blessings in this situation - though he dared not think of what he would eat when the time came ) , but another concern had struck him upon a blind stumble over a gnarled root. His health had been waning for some time yes, but his regenerative abilities had still worked, albeit slowly. Yet this? He’d scraped his hand catching himself, something that should have healed all too quickly despite it’s recent limitations still a stinging wound. Damn. Over the last years, he’d come to depend on it all too frequently, turning reckless in his actions - he’d need to learn to be careful again, lest he injure himself more gravely.
Ignoring the sting of the injury, Kaneki continued his search. To find another would serve as a better chance for both of them, and he was loathe to be alone longer than necessary - for he’d be lying, were he to claim he wasn’t entirely out of his element. Such situations he might have read about in books he’d read throughout his life, but to actually live it? He’d have a hell of a time, none of the training he’d been through meant for something like this.
Still, he’d not expected the first of whom he’d find to be, by all appearances, even more out of their element than he. A figure, wearing a helmet.. he’d been a little wary of approaching, being unarmed and incapable of using his kagune - but a desire for some kind of social interaction won over. The half ghoul approached the distant figure, keeping his pace a slow one. ❝ I was starting to think I was alone after all, no matter what that voice claimed when it spoke of others, ❞ he smiled softly, relief displayed in the manner he allowed his muscles to relax, before pausing in his stride some feet away. If this person was in the same situation as he, it wouldn’t serve him well to hold onto the colder persona he’d often worn before the ghouls of his organization. ❝ You heard it too, I hope? ❞
