Poetry is what he turns to these days, finding in its fragmentation the proper echo of the disintegrating world.

History fades into fable; fact becomes clouded with doubt and controversy; the inscription molders from the tablet: the statue falls from the pedestal. Columns, arches, pyramids, what are they but heaps of sand; and their epitaphs, but characters written in the dust?
-- Washington Irving
The stones here speak to me, and I know their mute language. Also, they seem deeply to feel what I think. So a broken column of the old Roman times, an old tower of Lombardy, a weather-beaten Gothic piece of a pillar understands me well. But I am a ruin myself, wandering among ruins.
-- Heinrich Heine
Bleeding terracota and zombie dust everywhere you look it's all what remained of the casino which once hosted the Austrian emperor Franz Josef I and the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. What changing authorities and crippling world wars couldn't finish, achieved the merciless weather under the neglect of communist authorities and the helplessness of the new ones. The heart of Vatra Dornei, that coquettish historical spa center in the northern Romanian province of Bukovina, has stopped beating and even its last stubborn ghosts deserted the crumbling atriums long time ago. What they left behind is just a dry husk, stripped naked of any trace of glamour, waiting for a last push to grave...
There's not much you can do about a dull feeling of loss. Even the rich roast of this Romanian imperial porter - Wicked Barrel's Piece of Cake - hints with its decadent vanilla, coffee and tonka mix at old and brilliant times, forever gone.
