*more Wastelanders spoilers below*
ALSO while I’m riled up can I just mention how totally stupid the conclusion of this main quest is?
Even ignoring that the whole point of raiding Vault 79 was to restore capitalism to a world destroyed by capitalism- I understand, it’s only been 25 years, I can forgive a little misguided idealism. (Plus we all know bottle caps win out in the end.) I’ve got some issues. And also some stuff about the main quest doesn’t make sense.
First thing: They let me keep a bunch of the gold I found in the vault, offering to trade it for tech and plans. Terrible business sense, but whatever. BUT THEN he offers to trade me for any gold I find OUTSIDE in Appalachia. Ummm didn’t I just break into this vault because it has ALL THE GOLD? But now suddenly there’s more elsewhere? Yes, I know it’s another reward for events or whatever, but where exactly is the gold bullion on the outside coming from? Are we opening the mines back up? Is the secret service leeching it back into civilization and then just sitting around waiting for me to bring it back like a well trained golden rad-triever?
Second thing: AC tells me not to try breaking into the ‘inner’ gold vault (?) because it has super high tech defenses and is impenetrable. He tells me this after I’ve broken into the impenetrable Vault 79 (and totally saved his ass.) Also, I’ve got a shotgun, how about you don’t tell me where I can and can’t go and what gold I can and can’t have?
Third thing: Because I’m a metalsmith (and also pendantic) WHY are the gold bars found in the counting room so weathered looking? Pure gold is inert and doesn’t corrode you dumb shits, that’s one of the reasons it’s so valuable. And gold bars in a treasury would have been handled with the utmost care. There’s no reason for it to be all dirty and dinged up. (Yes, this is the FO76 hill I want to die on.)
Fourth thing: Paige is mad about me giving Crater some of the gold because they’ll ‘squander’ it? Even if the economy you’re trying to build existed yet (which it doesn’t and also never will), them spending all the gold on chems would still count as contributing to it. Plus, we only got a tiny percentage of what we expected to find in the vault anyway. How about some gratitude?
Fifth thing: I’ve played Dead Money. Who’s to say I even want your stupid gold? I’ve LEARNED.
