Where the Backyard Meets the Sky
This morning, I sat outside with a coffee in hand, looking out over our backyard—and I realized just how much I crave a real space to enjoy it.
Right now, it’s just grass. Wide open. Kind of beautiful in its own way, but also… lacking structure. There’s nowhere to sit without dragging out a folding chair. Nowhere to read, relax, or share a quiet glass of wine as the sun dips behind the trees. It’s just space. Untouched. And I think I’m finally ready to do something with it.
I've been collecting photos, making little moodboards in my head. Not anything extravagant, just something simple and serene. A platform of warm wood. Maybe composite, so I don’t have to worry about rot or sealing every year. A place where my feet can land after stepping outside. I don’t need huge. I just want it to feel like it belongs. Like the backyard and the house are speaking the same language.
That’s how I ended up on Vantage Decks and Siding’s Veazie deck installation page. It kind of hit home—how they describe decks not just as additions, but as experiences. I love that phrasing. Because honestly, that’s what I want this to be: an experience. Not just some planks nailed together. Something that changes how we use the yard.
They talk about customizing decks to fit the home—about designing around you, not the other way around. I didn’t realize how many options existed. Composite vs. wood, yes—but also layout, railing, steps, seating, even elevated vs. ground-level. And Veazie’s not far from here, so I figure if they understand the weather, the slope, the soil there, they’d probably get Hampden too.
They even mention multi-tier builds, and while I’m not sure we have the room for that, the idea of a small platform with a second, lower area for a firepit? Totally doable. It’s got me dreaming of summer nights with soft lighting and a couple Adirondack chairs, maybe even a built-in bench that wraps around one corner.
Also, maybe this is a weird thing to care about, but I love that they help with permits and building codes. I don’t have the energy to learn what the town needs for footings and railings. I just want it done right. Safe. Legal. Solid.
It’s wild how seeing just a few pictures and reading about someone else’s approach can unlock all these ideas in your brain. I’m definitely going to reach out for a consult, even if it’s just to get a better sense of what’s possible on our lot. Sometimes you need someone else to walk through it with you and say, “here’s what we can do.”
So yeah, today it’s just coffee in a lawn chair and the sound of birds. But in a few months? Maybe I’ll be writing this same post from a deck instead—feet up, cup in hand, world a little more complete.
