What would you have done?
Yesterday I took a train and on this train there was a restaurant.
The menu said they had at least 3 vegan options. Cool, right?
As vegans, I would say, we try to pay as much attention as possible to the ingredients and what menus say wherever we go.
This menu had 2 logos: green for vegetarian and white for vegan. The options we wanted had the white logo on them.
We ordered all the vegan options of course. To our surprise the salad we ordered had a white, creamy sauce so I got suspicious and asked the waiter if the dressing was vegan. To that he said, with a tone of voice that was not nice, “but it’s vegan, it’s tofu, what’s not vegan?!” Well, we said, what’s this dressing made of? “It has yogurt, so?”, he said. “Well, we said, that’s a dairy product... “
He removed the plate from our table babbling some stuff, talking very loudly in the kitchen, I mean we all could hear him...
The new salad came after, then we ordered a beer, and the witty, silly waiter responded “so is beer vegan?!”
At that moment we paused, what should we do? It wasn’t our fault that the menu said one thing and this guy doesn’t have a clue about what veganism is, maybe he just fucked up the order and wanted to make us feel that it was our fault. Maybe he had a long day but why take it out on us? Should we say something or is it better to drop it? We kind of dropped it, but this situation was not easy to let go.
It felt like we were being discriminated for being vegan. Humiliated for being vegan.
The only loser here is the waiter, that’s pretty clear. But handling these situations with grace, humor, and empathy is quite difficult and I keep searching for a better comeback to say to this dude.
So to that guy I say: Do you feel that was necessary?
The end.
Unemployed for Eternity
There are no English-related jobs in Concord.
I cannot afford to move out and get an apartment on my own to find a job elsewhere.
Today I interviewed at a café and they were totally interested hiring me in like July, but when they asked if I had any issues with food and I told them I'm vegan, they said that they'd like me to be able to handle & prep meat.
Totally choosing veganism over employment.
Here's to the worst, cheapest summer of my life.
I just hope I can find a job before I have to start paying off my million dollars of school loans.
