We're working on making a new gardening area, and the ducks really like helping with this step! First I clipped down the himalayan blackberry, then we dug out most of the roots, then came this step, loosening the soil. After this we pull the bindweed roots out by hand, and then rake it even for seeding & transplanting.
Usually I like a more no-till, no-dig method of gardening, but with battling those two invasive species, it becomes a necessity.
The ducks were adopted from a person who was giving them away for free after not realizing what they were getting into (didn't even have the right feed), and along with being pleasant companions, they are wonderful slug eaters. They'll be 7 weeks old tomorrow, which as they are a strain developed for meat, they're at about 90% of their adult weight. But they'll be sticking around, don't worry! We got them as pets!
