DBZ: Namek Saga is the best one (can’t change my mind)
Dragon Ball as a whole is very interesting. It doesn’t have solid writing and has extreme writing inconsistencies, especially with Super. Characterizations have become botched in some cases, like they really dumbed down Goku. He doesn’t have that exact same charm that he had in Z. It’s extremely cliché, and focuses more on the fighting. The power scaling doesn’t mean shit anymore, but for some reason it’s a formula that still works. People still talk about Dragon Ball and the franchise is still making money. I guess if the formula ain’t broke, don’t fix it? But it would not kill Toriyama to have some meaningful character development that sticks ya know or isn’t filler.
I think that in terms of Dragon Ball as a whole, my favorite saga in my opinion is the Namek Saga, with the Saiyan Saga coming in as a close second. It’s where the writing was the most solid, the stakes were higher, and the risks were higher. You thought Vegeta was a threat?! Hell no! Take a look at this fucking lizard that destroys planets with the simple wave of his finger that wants to achieve immortality. All the Z fighters are either injured, weak, or fucking dead, and if they don’t succeed, it’s all over. Everyone stays dead, everyone alive will die, it’s really fucking tense and it’s a race against the clock. It’s literally do or die.
And Freeza, God, he’s so condescending, vile, evil. He loves what he’s doing. He relishes in evil and has no reason or need to change. He’s gotten everything he ever wanted, so why stop now. He’s a villain that you both fear and despise. The Z fighters are helpless when it comes to Freeza, and it’s the simplicity of his character that makes it fucking work. Not to mention the only way to defeat Freeza is with this Super Saiyan legend that no one has seen, that Freeza killed the Saiyans for, that Vegeta was so desperately clinging to as he fought Freeza. Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo are just trying to survive the fucking monster. There is a reason Dragon Ball Super brought Freeza back. He’s been a fan favorite villain for ages.
And the Namek Saga has some stunning moments: the iconic Super Saiyan transformation, Freeza’s transformations and the fear of each new transformation. Krillin’s second death. Like Goku watches Krillin get blown up in front of him. His longest friend is blown to pieces, and as far as Goku knew, he couldn’t be revived again. Which, ultimately causes him to break and go Super Saiyan.
But my personal favorite moment, out of all of that, is Vegeta’s death.
Because Vegeta throughout this entire arc, is still a threat. He’s still a villain. He and Nappa killed the Z fighters. Vegeta wanted immortality just like Freeza. He’s killed innocent Namekians and Freeza’s men. Vegeta was a fucking machine in the Saiyan saga that refused to stay dead, but the Z fighters are backed into a corner with Vegeta. They have to work with him in order to survive. It’s an alliance of convenience, and a very dangerous one at that because we don’t know if and when Vegeta is going to turn on them.
But this moment, right here, is fucking gut-wrenching. Because Vegeta before this moment got his spirit broken, his pride broken, his fucking back broken. The Z fighters earlier watched Freeza use Vegeta as a god damn punching bag. You can’t help but feel fear and pity for Vegeta. And his final moments, his final breath, pride be damned. He’s laying his soul to bare and crying. He’s forgoing his title and begging a Saiyan he’s despised since day one to kill Freeza. Avenge him, avenge the fallen, avenge the billions of lives slaughtered by Freeza’s hand alone. Please.
And there were no dragon balls on Namek to bring him back. There wasn’t even a guarantee he would be brought back because of his sins
(Oh and Freeza’s mocks Vegeta after he takes his final breath. BTW. That fucking monster)
And Goku, a Saiyan raised on Earth, who knew nothing of his heritage, who tried to ignore it up until this point if we’re being honest, finally gets it. He finally understands Vegeta, and realizes that this is so much bigger than defeating the bad guy and going home. He has to do right by him and everyone else.
I remember Joker’s line from the Nolan movies that people show who they really are when dying, or something to that effect. Both times when Vegeta dies in this franchise, his pride and ego be damned. He let’s it all go.
Which is why it was such BULLSHIT TO NOT LET VEGETA KILL FREEZA IN RESURRECTION F! TORIYAMA YOU FUCKING COWARD! IT WAS JUSTICE AND REVENGE! VEGETA NEEDED THAT!
Anyway. Namek Saga is best Saga, can’t change my mind.
