vel was the sole child and heir apparent to the sartha fortune, wealth accumulated mostly of student debt and partially art dealings ― her mother, head of the hanna institute of antiquities, and her father, a custodian of the gallery there. she spent the majority of her adolescence among the artistically superior, people who acted like life was a performance, and quickly found such a viewpoint was not of interest to her whatsoever -- especially as the galaxy began to descend further into the disarray of war, and then facist government, and no one around her seemed to care. it was vel's indifference and then staunch refusal regarding family tradition that grew the wedge between her and her parents, leaving her to spend far more time with mon when they visited coruscant rather than the bachelors they tried to nudge her toward: the last attempt they made was the chishiya family's heir in her early twenties, a pair that resulted in the blow-up of vel revealing her true romantic inclinations in the midst of yet another extravagant gathering. her parents have scarcely spoken to her since then, though vel is still able to use their reputation to her advantage when roped into luthen rael's rebellion against the empire, where she eventually meets and falls in love with cinta kaz. luthen's rebellion is one where love cannot exist, where you are encouraged to sacrifice everything including yourself for the cause -- and when cinta is gravely wounded after a too-short reunion, they both decide to value love in their fight and become part of the rebel alliance on yavin iv.
