Abuse can go two ways, though. You do have to give it a little credit. (*not* saying the crew did the allegory well, mind anyone who says otherwise)

the thing is the crew was clearly going for some sort of power imbalance dynamic, like you could tell clearly who they wanted you to sympathize with, but even then their message got across scrambled. 

i feel like the best thing to compare it to is rocknaldo, which was supposed to be a “fake allies” message but got horribly misunderstood due to really flimsy writing. malachite was meant to be a relationship where jasper manipulated lapis into fusing and then we’re supposed to see her as the abused one while trapped in malachite, but then it becomes ambiguous. the original intent got lost somewhere in the middle so the end result understandably caused a lot of discourse around who was abused and who wasn’t.

(note that i’m not condoning the tired old “butch characters are aggressive abusers” trope, but you can tell that’s what the crew was going for, unintentionally or not).

@velvetwyrm oh i understand that!!! a lot of my friends list it as their favorite game for that reason? i grew up w/ the zelda 64 games which is probably a factor as to why i find the art style more appealing omg

@moonmelter yeah the cel shading is definitely a nice touch but im with you!!! skyward sword is a beautiful game & has one of my favorite art styles altho i never finished it bc i had trouble with the controls :( i watched someone else play it tho its fantastic
