Hiiii do you have any recommendations for lesser known gothic fiction? Esp. late 1800s? Also any recs for books (or other media I guess) about architectural horror?
haii! really had 2 rummage through my brain for lesser known gothic fiction; i haven't even read a lot of the popular ones due to my ability to eread only having been gained recently... i don't have many recommendations for this sadly:
mathilda: another work by mary shelley, death note of the titular character mathilda that tells the story of her life up until her dying. deals with gothic incest, i often bring it up as criticism on incest. defs a fave
fosca: i need to read this myself but it's a favourite of @can-of-w0rmz!! so definitely go to him about it maybe... there's a musical adaptation free on youtube that is just gutwrenching, too.
la morte amoureuse: i do Not know what this is about. frankly. but the girl i mentioned above likes it. so.
the sorrows of satan: "set in late victorian london, the novel tells the story of geoffrey temptest, a struggling writer who unexpectedly inherits a fortune and is drawn into high society by the prince lucio rimânez. explores the themes of corruption and excessive decadence as well as the gothic trope of the faustian bargain." (as described by @frankingsteinery)
as for architectural horror!!! i do actually have two google drives full of books for it as made by someone else!! i'll link it here and here, most works are essays and i am currently reading the architectural uncanny by anthony vidler. here is a book and an essay in the drive i found inaccessible but later found elsewhere. and short essay about the house being metaphorical to the body in 19th c. novels! and another short essay discussing the feminist implications of identity loss in haunted house narratives. as for other media...
anatomy (game) — absolutely brilliant writing!! a biiiiig favourite, i have quotes from it as my discord status and private twt bio!! always quoting the monologue...
control, anatomy and the legacy of the haunted house (video essay): this actually was my introduction to the concept of architectural horror! started my descent into madness and all... i adore jacob geller, check out his other videos as well! both on architecture and not :3
gaming's harshest architecture (video essay): more geller, yaaay! more about nonsensical architecture
the black tower (short film): i interpret this as some type of traumatic memory loss with the trauma affecting the narrator's life, alongside an inaccesible childhood home
haunted houses (shrine): this is like a cocomelon to me. frankly.
childhood homes (game): makes me ill!!! i need to play it again ugh
the cellar door is an open throat (zine): i dont have anything to say its just very good.. i don't have access to it anymore, it used to be free and im a cheapskate but its def worth the money now LOL
also here is a collection of poetry as compiled by another user, whose artwork i also suggest you check out. she also has a rec list that is very cool and organised and has waaayyy more stuff than this post.
whilst trying to find my things, i kept stumbling upon new rec lists made by other users!! here's one and two and three!
i cannot think or find anymore at the moment... but that's plenty, i think... i may come back to edit this later!
