Linen - Do you prefer being friends with someone before starting a romantic relationship with them or starting straight into love?

i’ve tried jumping right into it in the past. last year, i went on a couple of dates with people i met on daring apps. four guys, i think? and each time, i felt like something was missing. they weren’t as interested in my interests, they didn’t have a certain sense of humor, they didn’t understand my gender the way i needed them to, they weren’t as progressive--over and over i kept finding flaws that really turned me off.

and then one day i was thinking. what was it that i was looking for? and i started to think about my best friend tuesday @showpig ... “well, the first guy wasn’t funny like tuesday. the second guy, he liked some of the same things as tuesday, but not in the Right Way. third guy? nice guy, but didn’t understand me quite like tuesday. fourth guy? well. he just didn’t see the world the way tuesday does.” and it hit me like literally a bag of bricks dropped as a warning shot from a bullet train coming my way. i didn’t want someone who was LIKE mx tuesday showpig. i wanted MX TUESDAY SHOWPIG. and i said to myself, “i’m in love with tuesday.” and then i went about my week, mumbling “i’m in love with tuesday” to make sure that felt right and it DID.

and then one day, tuesday made their usual “bro, what are we 😳” joke and i finally said “you want me to answer that?” and they said “maybe i do 😳”, so i did. and we’ve been together ever since. i felt like the long story was necessary to say that i think i needed us to be friends first. i needed us to be so deeply entwined with each other that realizing we were in love was just. yeah, of course we are. and i wouldn’t want it other way !
