Venetian-Egyptian Lighthouse in Chania

Chania's Venetian Lighthouse is among Chania's most famous landmarks, voted as the 2nd of 79 things to do in Chania Town from TripAdvisor visitors.

The original lighthouse was built by the Venetians around the late 16th century in order to protect the harbour entrance by the Turks. Its foundations lie on natural rocks and with a height of 21 meters, its light can reach a distance of 7 miles.

The lighthouse is also known as 'Egyptian Lighthouse' as it was rebuilt in the early 19th century, during a time when Crete was occupied by Egyptian troops, supporting the weakening Ottoman Empire. Its special architectural style reminds us of minarets and it is important to mention that its eight-angle lower part remains the original Venetian base.

Restored again a few years ago, in 2005, the lighthouse is not open for visitors, however it is well worth walking to the end in order to enjoy the lovely sea views.

The Venetian Lighthouse in Chania, Crete, Greece.

The centerpiece of the stunning Venetian harbour in Chania is one of the world’s oldest lighthouses. Built in the14th century, and restored in the 19th century, the lighthouse now draws visitors in Chania, who enjoy taking a stroll around the habrbourr and can climb up the lighthouse before dark.
