“The Story” I was rummaging through a cellar in Paris full of antiques covered with years and years of dust. There was a single light bulb dangling from the ceiling. A sparkle of gold caught the corner of my my eye. something was trying to get my attention. When I blew off the layers of dust and saw what was peaking through, I could hardly control my excitement, it literally took my breath away. During the 15th century, Venice had a monopoly on reflecting glass. Mirrors were not only a symbol of wealth and status, but also taste. Some were even more expensive than paintings due to the degree of elaboration and sophistication involved in their production! France under took an under-cover operation to steal the secrets of mirror making. Many corpses were left behind in the process. In 1682 a mirror factory was opened at Saint-Gibson which by the way is still an ongoing business! Well here it is a one- of- a -kind Venetian Baroque water-gilded mirror..circa 19th century. This is the real thing, not a copy of a copy of a copy. It is in Leo’s studio and still takes my breath away!
