Ink-Stained Fingers (Fullsize)
“She thinks I’m reckless,” Kili whispers, eyes unfocused and only half following the drops of afternoon sun dancing across the dark oak.
“Are you?”
“If you’d asked me ten minutes ago, I would have said no.”
“You know,” Thorin adds, “Of all the people I hate to ask this of, it’s you.” For the first time this afternoon Kili actually believes him. “The idea of placing you in danger doesn’t sit well with me. If it was any other way, I would find one. But you know that there isn’t. If it is going to be anyone, it has to be you.”
Choice.
Kili could just as easily say he has none; but the brutal fact of it is that part of him wants this. He’s always felt like he was missing something, fingers spread wide across mountain ranges and state lines, searching.
——- For Those Below, Chapter 1 by @vennor
Yes, we appear to be running a brand new, multi-chapter FiKi AU collab. Yes, I’m drawing again. Creativity inspires creativity, always.
Who’s pleased?
Thank you, so much, @vennor, for the lovely story to illustrate and new and exciting adventures in store, which I can’t wait to discover! You fell in through my roof yelling about FiKi and it was 100% just what I needed <3
Go, read the story here.
Hello! I'm needing some serious input with some aspects of a new Aidean plot I'm working on for AO3 (I write under a different name) - would you be keen or are you able to point me in the direction of anyone who could help? Thanks!
Hi there! Sorry I’m replying so late, I’ve been away on a business trip with only rudimentary internet access....guh.Soooo, well, right off the top of my head I can’t point my finger to anyone specifically and say yes, this is the person you need to ask....BUT if you share this in the Aidean tag (Imma tag this as Aidean if that’s ok) I’m sure there’s someone who’s keen and willing to give you some input. Also, if you want to share some plot ideas with me, I’ll be glad to help out if I can. Good luck! I’m excited for a new Aidean project, there has been so little recently....
Fanfiction Writer Asks! - Hello darling. I'd like to know your answers for 5, 8, 11, 17, 26 (Between The Boards, please!), 33, 45 and 48! Big love!
Hello, Fren!
Thank you for your many asks, I shall die answer them as best I can (no, honestly, it’s awesome!):
5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?
Again, with the ‘pick your favourite child’ thing!! I can’t, I won’t - I like them all for very different reasons.
Fairies I like for the sheer cuteness overload (and because it makes me think of cute things in real life and then accidentally buy them).
Boards I like because it feels so familiar to me, like I walked the streets where they might have lived.
Silence I like for the futuristic spin and because it’s fascinating to throw these characters I know so well into a very difficult situation and watch them fight and grow their way out of it.
Spellbound I like because it’s so raw and succinct and because I actually managed to write a twisted fairytale.
Kisses I like for the sheer variety of AUs and lots and lots of interesting little ideas that would have not otherwise found a home of their own.
And I like my one-shots too because it’s hard for me to be satisfied with a closed story, where I say everything I have to say and move on. I love all my children equally :D
8) Where do you take your inspiration from?
Answered here.
11) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?
No - I’d like to think I’ve got more self-confidence than this.
I have however abandoned one very early story, not because the feedback was bad, but because the feedback changed the way I saw the characters and their individual relationships, compared to how I’d perceived them when I started it. I think it made me grow as a writer and I never regretted it.
17) Post a line from a WIP that you’re working on.
Answered here.:P
26) Which part of your Between The Boards fic was the hardest to write?
Phwoah. That’s a tough one.
In a way the whole fic was hard to write, because it deals with such a sensitive topic, that it could have very easily gone very badly wrong, and I was determined to write a story about them, not of the war. Incorporating the historical background without shifting the focus of the story was hard.
In a way Boards was the easiest fic I’d ever written, because it all just poured out of me, and there was actually not that much editing done to it.
Emotionally, probably the hardest scene to write (but also my favourite) was the one where Fili throws away his house keys from a moving train. I have a pair of house keys too; it must have been years since I used them last, but they’re still on my keyring.
Technically, the scenes where they get to Sweden were hard to write, because I don’t know enough about Sweden, and so I’m forever living in fear of some Swede rocking up in comments and saying something like ‘um, actually we don’t have XYZ...’. So that took a lot of research.
Remembering and navigating around linguistic barriers was tricky, because it’s just such a habit to assume that they’re able to communicate in English. It still sometimes catches me off-guard that at home they’d actually speak German or perhaps a mix of German-Swedish as the time goes on; English is something they’d have to put effort into learning.
And then, to an extend, they’re right in the middle of that grand question: how could it have happened? Remembering of course that Boards was written before this whole neo-nazism nonsense re-surfacing, it was a challenge to write their reactions without picking apart the context.
33) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten?
I actually have screenshots saved of some of the comments I’d gotten on Boards, or Fairies or Spellbound, which are those lengthy descriptions written immediately after someone’s read the story, just brain-dumping all their feels. Those are awesome <3
Some incredible comments from several people who ended up reading straight through the night because they couldn’t put it down (life achievement unlocked!). People who have said that it’s not usually their thing, but they decided to read it anyway and how glad they are that they did. People who said that they’d read a book of it. And of course some extra-wonderful people who sometimes just message you, because they need more, they want to headcanon, they have questions or they’ve seen this thing that made them think of my story.
Hands down, I have had some incredible feedback over the years, I’ve been very lucky.
There are frequently commenters who I end up stalking looking up and wishing I could engage with more - people I wish I could talk to, who sometimes vanish as quickly as they appeared.
45) What spurs you on during the writing process?
Answered here.
48) What’s your favourite trope to write?
Hurt/comfort I think is my thing. Mostly because my biggest kink is strong, interesting, well-written characters and hurt/comfort allows you to cast your character in a challenging situation and see how they would deal with it. Incidentally, it’s also my favourite thing to read.
I also have a weakness for all forms of Soulmates AU, whether it’s explicitly stated or not. Oh, and I like Reincarnation AUs, because I don’t like them dying to think that their love story dies with them.
I can’t think of any particular scenario that I like above all others, though I think it would be fair to say that all sorts of historical AUs get extra points from me, just because of my personal interest in history.
I also really like porn (*shrug*, I do), and when it comes to writing it, I particularly like porn with feels, porn because of feels and porn just as good as feels. Again, incidentally I also really like reading such porn. :P
Thank you, this has been a pleasure to answer :D
