FiKi Week 2026 - Day 1 - Travelling to the Shire

This year I'm cheating, folks! Back in 2021 for the FiKi Week we already had a theme of 'missing scenes' and I did start a light-hearted little story about the boys, set in a modern setting.

For whatever reason, at the time, I wasn't able to do all the full week, and the story remained unfinished. This year I'm returning to it, and I have written some of my missing entries, but I will also be borrowing the parts from 2021 for some of the days. It will be a mix of old and new. I hope we have enough new faces in the fandom that at least for some of you this will be new and exciting either way.

I leave you to imagine your own version of the main plot points that we all know from the films, but set in this universe.

Fili was on the road.  

This in itself wasn’t an issue – Fili loved road trips: the open spaces, the feeling of freedom as the world whizzed past him, the sensually purring machine between his thighs… 

He even knew where he was going, which was more than he could say for any number of his previous excursions – he’d been sent a very specific address (half way across the country). But he had no idea why he was going there; in a typical ‘Uncle Thorin’ fashion, the text provided the minimum possible amount of detail: just the location, time and date.  

Fili had been summoned.

When his brow has been furrowed for too long or he’s reached the predetermined number of sighs allowed in an hour that seemingly activates some alarm in Fili’s programming, he often finds a hot mug being placed down next to his workpad or pressed gently into his hands by tanned fingers.

“Life’s problems are often eased by hot milky drinks,” Fili will tell him, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair back behind his ear.

Kili will look down at his mug of what is undoubtedly coffee with an obscene amount of sugar and chuckle.

“There’s not even milk in this, Fili.”

Fili will dismiss this with a wave and a smile, “It’s the sentiment”

This is how Kili knows he’s loved.

Roping the Wind

Fili is a cowboy who just wants to be able to find a place he can call home and people he can call his family.  When he stumbles across what seems like the perfect job, will he be able to let his past go, or will it ruin everything?

It’s still a work in progress, even if progress is slow.  It’s not abandoned, I promise. 

A little behind the scenes info - I grew up on a cattle ranch.  We raised horses and cattle, with an odd assortment of the other types of livestock you’d expect.  I’ve participated in round ups and rodeos, and spent a lot of time in the saddle.  I’ve also had a fascination with the old “Wild West” and done a lot of traveling around ghost towns, historical spots, and the like.  It made research a pleasure to do.  After the scene with the ponies in An Unexpected Journey, I was talking with a friend about the dwarves as cowboys.  Everything snowballed wildly out of control from there!

My Muse kinda found it, took it and ran with it, I hope it goes down ok. Perhaps you will now believe that your writing is really good and there are people eagerly awaiting each update. Perhaps you can believe in yourself a bit more, my dear. Have faith and courage. :]

Um, technical things: this thing got drawn twice. The original file I was really pleased with, but it got corrupted while saving, about an hour before it was finished. Non-recoverable. There was much drama, a weekend of wallowing in self-pity, but by now I feel I have avenged myself. Fuck you, Photoshop!

I keep cringing at the anatomy, but he is supposed to be half-starved, so… that is my excuse and I shall stick to it.

For a long time Fíli's world is small and simple. Something which he has created entirely by design. He keeps it to the hum of the tide and the salty bite of the wind. He keeps it to a life of quiet solitude broken only by the companionship of his dog, his best friend, Bryn.

Once, this had been enough.

On this morning, Fíli walks along the shore, his boots crunching over the pebbled beach. The sky overhead is a sullen grey that merges almost perfectly with the sea on the horizon. It is cold, the kind of cold that feels wet and cloying, seeping through layers and clawing its way into bone.

Fíli's hands are thrust deep into the pockets of his oilskin coat and the thick cord of Bryn's leash is looped loosely around his left wrist. He scans the ocean with squinted eyes, following the screeching gulls that skim low over the dark, restless waves. They're coming to shore, a storm is brewing.

Up ahead, Bryn ploughs through the rolling tide, kicking up sea spray with her large black paws and panting with deep, clouded huffs. She is in her element here, a true sea dog at home amongst the waves and the kelp. Fíli whistles to her, warning her not to go too far ahead. Bryn reluctantly relents by slowing her bounding gait at least a little. He watches her, his eyes creased somewhere between affection and weariness. He has no real intention of reeling her in before she is ready. There's no need; it has been a long time since he's seen another soul this far out. Anyone wandering up from the town would either have to be extra determined or extra stupid to navigate the treacherous rocks of the coastline to reach Fíli's lighthouse.

This belief is tested when Bryn let's out a sudden deep 'uff!' and abruptly picks up speed as she rounds an outcrop of rocks, her ears perked and tail straight like a banner.

“Your…your eyes…,” Fíli trailed off, glancing down his ghostlike form to where his feet glided across the ground.  He was walking.  Walking without a cane, without any sort of aid.  “H-how?” Fíli stuttered frightfully.  Kíli’s face softened, and he reached out, gently caressing the side of Fíli’s face.

“Do not be afraid my Ra.  The gods guide me. Lay down your arms,” he spoke, his voice like the wind.  He stood tall, body shimmering in the moonlight.  His hair swirled around his face like it had a life of its own, no longer contained beneath his headdress, and his feet and legs showed no sign of weakness.  The jewels that adorned him glittered about his neck and shoulders, and his eyes glowed brightly to match them. Fíli had never felt fear such as he did in that moment.  Not even amidst battle.  It was impossible. He looked not at Kíli, but at a god.

“A-Amun,” Fíli wheezed, dropping his khopesh to the ground.  He was frozen in place, not only by the soil his feet had sunk into, but by the command of a greater power.  There was a strange pained smile upon the Pharaoh’s face, and his hand slipped away as he walked onwards, approaching the opposing commander.

There are several stories I would kill to read an update on, but I keep coming back to this one again and again. It’s ancient Egypt AU, so spot on my jam, but more than that, @shinigami714 has got this ability to create Filis that are mysterious, hot and interesting, like you just want to thrust them into various situations just to see what they will do. And it keeps you hungry for more.
