Life on Venus, part 2
Still not braining all that good with my cold. Stupid thing keeps fading away and then coming back so I can never quite tell if I’m actually getting better.
Last time I looked at the idea of using breathable air for a lifting gas on Venus. That’s a workable idea, but our air is a pretty poor lifting gas there. Construction would either have to be extremely light and populations kept at a low density, or the habitats would have to be truly massive to take advantage of the very good scaling that low pressure lighter than air structures can have.
With breathable air as a lifting gas, early settlements on Venus would need to shave every pound possible. Agriculture would need to be efficient, and likely soil-less. Construction would probably be done using lightweight, high strength composites and foams. Water would be relatively rare, at least liquid water. Counter-intuitively, water vapor decreases the density of air so the habitats would likely be kept fairly humid.
Cities, or other high density areas, could exist but they’d be part of truly massive habitats with enclosures perhaps kilometers in height.
Vast, airy, open spaces would be the norm. I suspect that our cities would feel claustrophobic by comparison.
But what do I know? I’m still kind of loopy and maybe a touch feverish right now.
