Growing on Me | Jack & Vera
Jack would never say it aloud, but he was impressed with the amount of things Vera seemed to be able to cram into the two traveling bags she always brought with her. When it came to setting up camp, his tastes were simple. Her’s, on the other hand were much more elaborate.
He’d set up the tents and then threw a couple of rabbits over the fire. In the meantime, she had changed for dinner (as was her habit) and had made a place for herself under the tree with a small folding table set with china and silverware. By the time she’d arranged all of this just so, he’d already picked through his own dinner with his hands before she had even taken her seat.
Everything finally seemed arranged, but she was trekking from one side of their camp to the other and then back to the car; walking about the forest in her dress and heels as though she was the mistress of a fine city house somewhere, and not someone who would be sleeping on the hard ground in a few hours. He knew what she was looking for, but he was having too much fun watching her search round in round for it to tell her where it was.
Finally, he raised an amused eyebrow, pulling her seat cushion that he had swiped that morning from his bag. He did make the effort to stand and place it with an exaggerated gesture where she meant to sit. “Your Highness.” On his way back to his spot by the fire, he swiped a bite of her untouched food. He smirked. “It’s gone cold.”
Where the Skies Are Blue (flashback) | Vera & Lina
Lina raised a hand to shield her eyes from the setting sun. She had been walking, arm in arm, with Vera near the shoreline when she’d stopped to cast a glance up at Seb and Jack. The pair of them were up on the hill, near the house.
“Do you think we were right to leave them alone?” She asked teasingly, turning back to Vera. Lina couldn’t say that she knew Jack well, but there was something about him that reminded her a little of Nathaniel Dawson. And she knew well enough the trouble he and Seb used to get into, when left unsupervised.
It had been a long time since Lina had seen Vera. She and Seb visited Veronica and the others now and again, but Vera and Jack were often away. It was good to see her now (even if it was only for the night).
“I noticed when you arrived that Jack had combed his hair ... or at least made some attempt at it,” She grinned, as they continued on, “Your influence truly knows no bounds.”
‘ that supposed to scare me? ’ Vera x Jack
"What are you doing in my bag?"
Vera looked up at Jack's words, a letter clutched in her hand. Her mind was spinning. She had both nothing and too much to say at that moment.
"Give me my bag, Vera," he took one step towards her, his voice low and serious in a way she had never heard before. She didn't move.
"We trusted you. Virginia trusted you. I trusted you," she seethed, her hand closing tighter around the piece of paper in her hand.
"Vera, listen," Jack began but she jumped to her feet, knocking his bag to the ground between them.
"You told Vardon about Beatrice. You're the reason she and Lina are his prisoners," Vera hissed, thrusting the letter in her hand out towards him, proof that what she said was the truth.
Both Jack and Vera stared at one another, unmoving and silent. It seemed as if the entire forest around them was devoid of sound, like the moments before a storm would erupt.
That meant that when she saw Jack's eyes suddenly dart to the ground between them, Vera immediately followed his gaze. She could see the hilt of his revolver peeking out from the bag, sun glinting off the polished metal.
Their gaze met once again for a mere second before they both lunged for the weapon.
Vera don't know how she managed to get her hands on the revolver before Jack, but when she felt his hands on her, hoisting her off the ground, she managed one well placed kick before rolling out of his grasp and scrambling to her feet.
" 'that supposed to scare me?" Jack huffed from the ground before pushing himself back to his feet. Vera had the revolver pointed at him, her hands shaking. "You ever even held a gun before, sweetheart?"
"Don't call me that."
"It isn't even loaded," he chuckled, taking a step towards her.
"You're the reason I lost my family."
"It wasn't personal, doll. Money talks. Now give me that before you hurt yourself."
The shot rang out across the forest before she even registered what she had done.

💕 vera knight + bea crandon
“You know you don’t have to do this,” Vera Knight pointlessly informed Beatrice Hartwright as she loaded a very small bag into the back of a car. Bea turned around and gave Vera a sad smile.
“I know, but I want to do this,” she replied simply. Vera let out a small huff.
“Just as I thought I might have a companion in civility in this place,” she let out a rather dramatic sigh. “While I don’t envy your return north, I will confess I do envy the fact you’ll have proper tea to drink… and champagne,” she added, giving Bea a very small smirk. The other woman let out a laugh.
“So I suppose you’ll go back and… what? Finally give in to that miserable Cradon fellow?” Vera inquired. Bea shrugged her shoulders slightly, leaning against the car as the driver approached from across the way.
“I don’t really have a plan at the moment… just try to learn as much as I can to send back to Virginia… and make sure Lina and Veronica are alright,” Bea answered, wringing her hands a bit nervously.
“I do wonder if we’ll ever see one another again,” Vera mused suddenly. She’d been at peace leaving her old friends and life behind when she left for the south and had been overjoyed the moment Bea had stumbled into their camp. But after only a short stay, she was leaving, returning to the north to spy for Virginia and the forces working against Vardon. Though Vera knew how noble it all was of her dear friend, she somehow found herself feeling even more alone than when she first arrived among these strangers in the south.
Bea reached out, grabbing her friends hands in her own and squeezing them tightly.
“Of course we will,” she reassured Vera. “This can’t last forever… and once its all over, we’ll get you a properly cushioned seat and have tea with Lina and Veronica, just as before.”
“Now you’re just making fun of me,” Vera answered with a laugh. The driver arrived, announcing it was time for them to depart. He would take Bea most of the way to the border in order for her to make her way back to the Capitol and begin her life as a spy for the south.
“Oh, my dear, dear Bea,” Vera reached out to hug her friend. “I only wish you all the best and do, please, be careful. How I hate to lose you again.”
“I’m not lost,” Bea replied, returning Vera’s hug before sliding into the passenger’s side of the vehicle. “No matter where I am, you’ll never lose me as your friend.”
Vera watched as the car drove down the road, disappearing over the hill. Letting out a small sigh, she turned back towards the new place she called home.
🍴 jack and vera
“I simply won’t eat it.”
“Then I simply won’t care if you pass out from hunger along the side of the road!”
Vera glared across the table at Jack Lewis who matched her with an equally unhappy gaze. This first trip together had been nothing short of a disaster. Now, sitting in the safe house Vera had been convinced was a potting shed, they had come to blows of the dinner Jack had prepared that evening.
“Can you even cook for yourself?” Jack asked. Vera did not reply. Jack shrugged and reached across the table, grabbing the plate and pulling it over towards him, where he began eating as if nothing about it were out of character.
“Excuse me!” Vera exclaimed, astonished. Jack looked up at her.
“Can I help you?”
“You don’t just take someone else’s food! Its incredibly rude!” Vera proclaimed. Jack chuckled, pausing to use his fork to pick some food that had gotten stuck in between his teeth. Vera thought she might faint.
“Doesn’t seem to matter if said person had proclaimed they aren’t eating it,” Jack informed her. “Plus… don’t know if you’ve noticed, sweetheart, there isn’t anyone else around,” he held up his arms to gesture to the empty room. “And I don’t think the undead give a shit about my manners.”
Vera was silent for a few moments.
“Its Miss Knight, if you please,” she snapped, standing up and marching into the small room (if you could even call it that) and slamming the door shut behind her.
