The completed Mullein drawing that will make its debut as a screenprint on Wednesday at 8pm ET! 🌿 Mullein is known as a plant of fire, dedicated to Hecate and ruled by Saturn. Its magical uses are vast, including protection, courage, banishing, health, love, divination, and jinxing. In Roman times, the dried stalks of Mullein were soaked in tallow or oil and set alight as torches in funeral processions. Over centuries this practical use was adopted by witches and magical folk so much so that one of Mullein’s many nicknames is ‘Witch’s Taper’ or sometimes ‘Hag’s Taper.’ A circle made of Mullein torches will allow the practitioner full command over any spirits or demons that enter it. Furthermore, the smoke is used to banish and protect, as well as for casting against enemies. Shortly before releasing the Mullein print last month I came across the largest field of Mullein I have ever encountered. Acres of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of beautiful stalks rising like sentinels from soft green leafy “flames.” Standing amidst them felt cathartic and energizing all at once. I started the Witch’s Cabinet series as a way to honor the plants I have personal connections with, and Mullein was one that immediately grabbed me when I first got serious about my herbal studies. I recall noticing it for the first time and seeing a bright aura around the plant that drew me to its unique studded stalk and downy leaves. At the time I was experiencing lung and throat irritations, which happen to be Mullein’s medicinal specialty, so it was no surprise that it reached out. Since then I’ve come to know Mullein as one of my main plant guides and when I greet it on this earthly plane it feels as though I’m embracing an old friend. What inspires me most about Mullein is its sunny spirit combined with its strong tethers to the underworld. This harmonious balance of light and darkness is something I see mirrored in my own being— whereas I would describe my personality as sunny, I have a love affair with darkness that manifests in my artwork.
