Why Do You Need an Address Standardization API?
Poor address data quality is a multi-billion dollar challenge for businesses and postal carriers around the world. It can lead to shipping delays, returned packages, and customer service issues.
Using an Address Standardization API to capture and store addresses that are in the right format reduces these problems and ensures your mail pieces are delivered successfully. This is especially important for direct mail marketing and eCommerce.
How an Address Standardization API Works
Before an address can get validated, it typically needs to go through parsing and standardization. These steps break an address down into numerous parts and then format it to match the standard address format that is required by governing authorities.
This process is usually performed manually, but you can also use address standardization technology to automate it. These technologies will automatically format addresses to match the USPS standards.
How the EDQ Address Validate API Works
Experian Data Quality (EDQ) addresses are sent to the EDQ Address Validate API when you create or update a customer record through the Generic Customer API, order API, catalog requests, and customer maintenance.
When an address is received from the EDQ Address Validate API, it is verified against national postal authorities like the U.S. Postal Service to make sure it is valid and properly formatted.
Depending on how the EDQ Address Validate API processes the address, it can return one of three deliverability statuses and detailed information: VALID, SUSPECT, or INVALID. The API will also suggest a correction for the address.
