Birds look funny when you look at them from the front. This pair of Common Grackles were carved by Bob Spear in 1992. Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us on Sunday. It was a “bee-u-tiful” day! In addition to trailwork, prepping for programs, and stocking the gift shop, they moved truckloads of wood chips! Thank you also to those who weren’t on-site Sunday but have helped the museum in previous days/weeks as we prepared for opening day. The museum is officially open for our 36th year! It is #InternationalVultureAwarenessDay. Vultures are often judged by their looks, and to some they aren’t as beautiful as other birds. To others, their looks simply highlight some of their amazing adaptations. Did you know the scientific name for the Turkey Vulture is Cathartes aura meaning ‘golden purifier’ perhaps due to their ability to clean up their environment. Katherine Guttman (@stitchycrow) created “Recognition” with embroidery thread and seed beads on cotton.
