Shoelaces
It wasn’t Lee’s fault that Natalie was having a shitty week.
It wasn’t Lee’s fault she was knocked out in the middle of a battle, it wasn’t Lee’s fault that it took her around 20 minutes before she could figure out how to use the kettle.
It wasn’t Lee’s fault that she lost chess to Sam a million times before she got too frustrated to play.
It wasn’t Lee’s fault that she was constantly dropping things, tripping over things, hitting her head on things and generally being incompetent at everything she came into contact with.
The only things that was Lee’s fault was the fact that she was the only one noticing how Natalie hung back when they received their bowling shoes at the Space Station- Brooklyn and Matt’s favourite childhood arcade.
They say it was one straw that broke the horses back…. or something, and this was Natalie’s proverbial straw. Shoelaces.
She was half ready just to tie them in a sailors knot that she learnt from Alex and have done with it, but the other half was berating her for not being able to get it right.
You’ve been here for months Natalie you should know how to do this.
Brooklyn’s already showed you this Natalie you should be able to do it.
If you can’t even use a kettle of course nobody should expect you to be able to do something as competent as tie shoelaces Natalie.
“Natalie?”
“What?!” She snarled, her head whipping up at Lee looked alarmed, nearly jumping five feet.
“Are you alright?” Lee asked concernedly, and at any other point in time Natalie would have teased her about the bright red bowling shoes she had on, but at this point she was too damn frustrated to care.
“I can’t-” Natalie got halfway through the bow before it tangled and went all over the place.
She threw the shoe down in disgust.
It Rosana you either wore heels (God Forbid) or boots with buckles. None of this complicated shoelace thing that took about five minutes to do properly.
“Natalie-” Lee started cautiously, now hyper aware of how easily she was set off “Can you not tie your shoelaces?”
The girl just sunk lower into her seat, cheeks burning with colour and her eyes fixed on where Brooklyn, Matt, Sam and Veronica- one of their friends- were avidly talking.
“Does it really matter Miss Know-it-all or have you come to brag?” She muttered angrily, but Lee just blinked, recognising the frustration of not being able to figure something out all too well.
She’d actually lashed out at Abby sometimes when she couldn’t do something as quick or met a problem she couldn’t fix right away.
“Did you know that I only learnt how to tie my shoelaces at 10?” Lee said, trying to pull off an air of nonchalance at one of her secrets that even Abby didn’t know and Natalie looked up, a small scowl still on her face.
“And I thought you knew everything” She mumbled and Lee decided to pretend like she didn’t hear that.
And Brooklyn has told them to ‘get along’ right? So this was a start.
“I used to get teased about it all of the time at school, until I got so frustrated that I threw one of my shoes at the wall” Natalie snorted slightly, before hastily looking away again like she didn’t care “One of the older girls in my Foster Home noticed and came to tell me off, but then she found out and sat me down”
Lee picked up the shoe, setting it on one of her knees and trying to remember the little metaphor she’d made up for it.
“So you just tie a knot, then you make one loop. This is the tree, then the rabbit runs around the tree, down into its hole-” She poked one lace through the other “And hides”
Lee had to physically stifle the small childish smile of pride she got from actually tying shoelaces and set the shoe down.
“Lee your turn!” Matt almost whined impatiently and she glanced back at Nat and shrugging.
“Just a thought” She said, jogging off to the bowling balls.
Natalie watched her bowl awfully, the ball going straight into the gutter as Matt doubled with laughter, Brooklyn scolding him with a grin.
She couldn’t help a small smile, undoing the lace and shoving it on her foot.
What was it again?
Make the tree. The rabbit goes around the tree, down into the hole… and hides.
She actually grinned when she looked at the slightly lopsided bow.
Then she looked up and caught Lee looking at her with a cocked head and a small smile.
Natalie felt her cheeks redden, before she shrugged embarrassedly and mouthed ‘Thank you’ at the girl.
So her week might have sucked, but at least she could tie her shoelaces.
Veronica: What the hell were you thinking?!
Matt: I thought releasing birds was romantic
Veronica: YOU RELEASED OSTRICHES!!!
