V E R S A C E . Fall 1991. Hemlines were short, boots were thigh high, and the Supermodel was created! This was one of Gianni’s most iconic and beloved collections. Full of colour, this was during his “Signatures” period, when he used wild prints, Baroque influences and embellishment to the max, something his sister, Donatella recently revisited and celebrated with her Spring 18, “Tribute” collection. Of course this collection would also become legendary when Gianni sent Linda, Christy, Cindy and Naomi down the runway miming George Michaels Freedom ( of which they all stared in the video clip, along with Tatjana ), creating one of fashions biggest and, most, historic moments! V E R S A C E . Spring 1993. Known as the "Miami" collection, Gianni injected kaleidoscopic colours and prints into floaty dresses, ruffled flares, Gypsy skirts and hot pants. It may have had a Miami feel, but the silhouettes were a mix of Hippie and Boho, a trend that was sweeping the world at this particular time, Dolce & Gabanna, Anna Sui, even Karl was feeling for the aesthetic at both Chloe and Chanel (And remember Madonna's "Girlie Tour", she made this look global! ). V E R S A C E . This year is the 20th anniversary since the world lost one of the greatest fashion designers of all time. This week marks the beginning of my celebration of Gianni, his iconic collections and campaigns, and the women he adored. Fall 1994 is by far my all time favourite! All the Supers, Linda, Christy, Naomi, Claudia, with their blunt fringes and samurai like ponytails, was one of the most exciting fashion presentations of the 90s ( if your a fashion fan, I suggest you look this collection up on YouTube ). Patent and metallic leathers, pastels and bold block colours, cropped jackets, mini skirts, pinafores and turtleneck sweaters ( not to mention the variations of chainmail gold dresses for the finale, chainmail being a house staple ), it was a cross between Rock Chick and naughty Preppy private schoolgirl ( you know, the girl who always got in trouble for her skirt being hitched to high ). The campaign for this collection is perhaps the most iconic of all of Gianni’s! Shot by Avedon it featured Christy, Claudia, Stephanie, Cindy and Nadja, five of fashions sexiest Glamazons, bringing to life this amazing collection. V E R S A C E . Spring 1995. Possibly one of Gianni's most feminine and prettiest collections. There were pastel chiffons, satin corsets, florals and those iconic Butterfly and Lady Bug prints ( of which Donatella referenced in her latest collection ). If you have the chance, I strongly recommend watching the collection on YouTube. A time When the runways were dominated by Supermodels and photographers and fashion folk cheered and clapped as each girl made her way down the catwalk. The campaign came in two variations. One featuring Kristen McManamy and the other Madonna, both shot by Steven Meisel. Kristen's campaign was more daytime, "Ladies who Lunch", while Madonna's was a little more Silver Screen Glamour. I remember having the campaign with Madonna, it came as a poster, the image of her in a purple chain mail gown eating an apple. v e r s a c e This year marks the 40th anniversary of the house that Gianni built and the 20th of Donatella as the successor of his infamous label. Taking the reigns after his shocking murder, it’s not been all rainbows and sunshine at the house of Versace, as the world well knows, but Donatella has done her utmost best to continue her adorned brothers legacy. Over the coming weeks I’ll be celebrating my favourite collections and campaigns by fashions favourite blonde, starting with her collection for Spring 98. Abstract florals, petal pushers, slashed suiting, and halter necks a plenty, the collection was met with mixed reviews, not to mention emotions. I loved it! To have produced this with what had just recently happened was, to Donatella’s credit, nothing short of tremendous. Houndstooth was also a strong message in this collection, lending to a somewhat masculine element, it was chic and wearable to women the world over ( wearability would be something Donatella would further explore under her reign, making fashion relevant and relateable ).
