“Sleepy,” she says as she tilts her face up to accept his kiss. “We didn’t make it through our fifth read of Hello, Bugs!”

He lets out a low whistle. “Sleepy is right. Exciting day?”

“Oh, yes,” she says, watching—with some surprise—as he kneels to kiss Nicola’s forehead. She was rather expecting him to scoop her up and take her back to the nursery. “Lots of supporting ourselves and rolling over, followed by a walk around the floor and then a strenuous bath.”

“Sorry to miss it,” he says, sounding honestly regretful. “But hey, I finally got your present.”

Surrounded by Grant’s scent, it’s easier to pretend she’s in his arms. Sleep comes swiftly.
