YOU READ THAT TITLE RIGHT, Y’ALL. FIFTY. FREAKING. TWO.

I did it!!!!

A fic a week, every week, for fifty two weeks. Sometimes I cheated, just slapping an ending on a drabble that’s been sitting on my hard drive forever. Sometimes I only managed 100 words. But I still got it done! FIFTY TWO WEEKS with a fic!

Thanks so much to everyone who’s commented or kudo’d or replied to my fics this year. It was only thanks to your encouragement and support that I was able to keep going. I love you all the most <3

(And to those who’ve asked: haha, no, I am not doing this challenge again in 2021. No one should do this challenge. 0/10 would not recommend.)

And now that my gushing is complete, without further ado, my stats for 2020:

52/52 weeks with a fic!!!!!! 172,231 words          (for comparison, I wrote 24,161 in ALL of 2019 - so this year’s total is more than SEVEN TIMES last year’s)          (that’s an average of approximately 3,312 words per week) 3 Harry Potter fics - my first in like 8 years 2 Game of Thrones fics - my first ever 39 Jemma/Grant fics - this year reignited my love for biospec in a way I really did not expect! hopefully it did the same for y’all and I wasn’t just...spamming you with a pairing you’ve all moved on from lol 7 Jemma/Will fics - you wouldn’t know if from that ratio, but I actually ship them harder than I do Jemma/Grant. it’s just that I want these bbs to live HAPPILY EVER AFTER with ZERO STRUGGLES and I’m just not very good at writing plotless fluff. oops. 2 Jemma/Hive fics - he’d be so offended. oh well.        (if that math doesn’t quite add up, it’s because one of my fics was both Jemma/Grant and Jemma/Will) 5 years-old WIPs finished!!!! in case you missed them:         sunset in your eyes (first started June 2017, last updated May 2018)         erase myself and let go (start it over again) (first started November 2014, last updated January 2015)         would you be sorry (if i swore that i’d be there) (first started January 2016, last updated October 2016)         current drag me down (first started June 2016, last updated August 2016)         a war between the good and bad (first started December 2015, last updated January 2016) I turned 20 old, half-finished oneshots into fics I came up with 27 new, original ideas

Overall, as horrible and not-fun as this challenge was (seriously. would not recommended. zero stars.), I feel very accomplished! Thank you again to everyone who commented, kudo’d, subscribed, and bookmarked - it means a lot.

“Uh…” Grant, still very thrown by the unexpected orders, actually has to take a minute to think about it. “About three days. Had to get her across the border, reach a safehouse, and find a doctor.”

“Yeah,” Coulson sighs. “That tracks.”

“Sir? You wanna tell me what’s going on?”

“I will,” Coulson assures him, “but it needs to be in person. We’ll join you as soon as we can—and in the meantime, you need to stay as far off SHIELD’s radar as possible.”

“Good morning,” she returns calmly. She’s settled in the chair outside his cell like she intends to stay a while, hands neatly folded on her lap. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

Funny.

“Nothing that can’t wait,” he says, dropping to sit on the bed. “But I’ll interrupt you before you even start.” He puts some regret in his voice, hits her with the sad eyes and apologetic frown. “I’m sorry, but I can’t answer your questions. I’m only talking to Skye.”

Simmons doesn’t even blink.

“Yes, I’ve heard,” she says. “But while I do have questions, they’re not why I’m here.”

These days, Mum settles for dragging herself out of bed at 6:53 to say goodbye and make sure Molly gets off to school today—and even that’s an obvious struggle for her.

Which is why Molly is so surprised to walk into the kitchen early Tuesday morning and find Mum there, fully dressed and staring blankly at the refrigerator. The closed refrigerator.

“Mum?”

Mum starts and turns. She’s weirdly pale in the kitchen’s warm light. “Molly.”

She says it weird, almost like a question—like Molly is the one who’s supposed to be asleep right now.

week forty six drabble

thank you for all the kind messages. <3 

for probably obvious reasons, I’m not much in a mood to write just now, so please accept this drabble I’ve always meant to expand into a real fic. maybe someday I will! for now, this is all I’ve got to offer.

The doors have no sooner swung shut behind the guard dragging Simmons than they’re opening again so he can drag her right back in.

…Except that’s not exactly true. This time, he’s not dragging her. This time, she’s walking—hell, she’s practically leading the way.

Grant eyes her, taking in her suddenly relaxed demeanor, and is immediately on guard. She’s up to something for sure.

(In return, she gives him a slow, disdainful once-over and then looks pointedly away. Rude.)

“Is there a problem?” Malick asks coolly.

The guard shrugs. “She says she’ll talk.”

Well. That was quick.

“Is that so?” Malick gives Simmons a once-over of his own. She rolls her eyes, all impatience. “Why the sudden change of heart, Miss Simmons?”

“It’s not sudden,” she claims, lifting her chin. “I could hardly agree to help you in front of Fitz, could I? I was simply waiting until we could be alone.”

Malick raises an eyebrow at Grant; he shrugs. He wouldn’t expect Simmons to cooperate on the best of days, and after that little show she put on earlier? He was already bracing himself for what they were gonna have to do to her to get answers.

This is more than unexpected. It’s downright suspicious.

“Just like that?” he asks.

“Just like that.”

“And the catch?” he presses. She frowns. “Come on, Simmons, don’t play dumb. You’re no good at it.”

Her lips thin. “There’s no catch, Ward. You want the portal open and so do I. It’s that simple.”

“And why,” Malick asks, in that annoyingly slow way of his, “do you want the portal open?”

Simmons rolls her eyes, that old, familiar why is everyone so stupid look flitting ever so briefly across her fact, and Grant gets hit with an unexpected pang of nostalgia. It’s been years since the Bus, since he got to see that look on a near-daily basis (pretty much every time someone interrupted one of her science briefings to ask for the bottom line), and he didn’t realize until right this second that he actually still kind of misses it.

Not the blindly following part, doing SHIELD or Coulson or even John’s bidding without question, but…the little family they built? Yeah. That he does kinda miss.

But Simmons doesn’t know or care about his nostalgia. She’s looking at Malick, not him.

“The same reason you do,” she says impatiently. “To bring him back.”

Grant and Malick both stare.

“Oh, honestly,” she snaps. “Don’t look so surprised. I spent six and a half months there and he was the only other thinking being on the entire planet. It’s only natural we would…bond.”

Something about the way she says it—

“Simmons,” he says, caught somewhere between amusement and unease, “be honest. Did you fuck our supreme leader?”

Malick cuts him a sharp look—probably for the disrespect; he takes this whole thing weirdly seriously—but Simmons just stares him down.

“As I said,” she says evenly, “we bonded. And there wasn’t much to do on that planet.”

Okay. Yeah. Simmons definitely fucked Malick’s would-be god.

…He is so glad she spilled that before they started with the torture.

This prompt is suuuuuuuuuper old, but for week forty seven I have slapped an ending on the drabble I started in response to it however long ago. I hope you (and every one else!) enjoy! <3 <3

When the barrier clears to reveal Simmons standing on the otherside, Grant’s ready to inform her—just like he has every other visitor—that he’s only gonna talk to Skye.

Before he can do more than open his mouth, though, he gets verydistracted. “Is that my shirt?”

Simmons scoffs. “Don’t be ridicu…”

As she speaks, she’s glancing down at herself. The horror on herface when she realizes that yeah, that grey Henley is one hundred percent his,is priceless. She pinches a bit of the fabric beneath the collar and pulls itaway from her skin, face twisted in disgust like she’s thinking about takingthe shirt off here and now.

Rude—but also tempting.

Still, as nice a sight as Simmons in her bra would probably be,Grant’s riding a nine-month-long dry spell here. The last thing he needs is more sexual frustration, which—as heseriously doubts she’d let him do any touching—is all that could end in.

A distraction is in order. Except he also really wants answers. So…

“Why are you wearing my shirt?” he asks.

For a second, she turns that disgusted frown on him. Then shepointedly returns her attention to the tablet she’s holding like he’s not evenworth her notice. Something she doesn’t wanna admit to him, then…which presentssome interesting options.

“It’s okay if it’s because you missed me,” he says, careful tokeep his tone understanding instead of taunting. “I don’t mind.”

Actually, it’s a pretty appealing thought. The idea that all thatwork he put into her is still paying off, that even as she hates him she’slonging for him…the image of her sneaking into his bunk to steal a few of hisshirts, hating herself even as shetakes them back to her room…

Hell, the image of her curled in her bed, wearing his shirt andnothing else. Touching herself, thinking about him, fucking her fingers andpretending they’re his—

Fuck. So much for avoiding sexual frustration.

“I’ve missed you, too,” he adds, ripping his mind away from thatvery appealing scenario.

Simmons turns her nose up at him.

“No one misses you, you berk,” she claims. The disdain in hervoice might be convincing, but her white-knuckled grip on that tablet saysotherwise. “This was just an accident.”

“You…accidentally took a shirt from my bunk instead of yours?” heasks. He pulls on his cover just a tiny bit to give her a teasing kind of smile—anAgent Grant Ward look that invites her to laugh at her own terrible lie.

Back on that Bus, this smile got her to confess to a lot of things—everythingfrom a soon-to-be-dead enemy goon hitting her mid-mission to that time she andSkye snuck away in the middle of the night to get milkshakes.

Here and now, it only gets him an impatient frown.

“If you really must know,” she says sharply, “all of your thingswere moved to storage shortly after we settled into this base. I must havegrabbed one of your boxes by mistake when I retrieved my own last night.”

…Okay. Grant’s things being in storage, he gets—he’s a prisonerafter all. But… “Why were your things in storage?”

“None of your business,” she says, and hits the screen of hertablet rather forcefully. “I have questions about—”

“I’m sorry,” he interrupts. “I don’t know if Coulson told you, butI’m only speaking to Skye.”

Slowly and with a great deal of visible irritation, Simmons liftsher eyes to meet his. “We’ve been speakingfor several minutes now.”

“We have,” he agrees. “But anything else, I’ll only say to Skye.Sorry.”

Grant has to hand it to her—Simmons is beyond stubborn. UnlikeCoulson, who’s never lasted more than five minutes, she actually keeps talkingat him for another thirty before finally throwing her hands up and leaving indisgust.

If it were Coulson, he’dprobably be annoyed, but as it’s Simmons? Those thirty minutes give him plentyof time to memorize the whole scene—the way his shirt hangs off her curves, thev above the button framing her cleavage, the sleeves she has to keep shovingback up as they fall past her knuckles…

He’s not gonna lie, Simmons looks damn hot in his shirt.

In all honesty, there’s no avoiding sexual frustration after allthese months he’s spent locked in a hole in the ground cell. And since he’sgonna be frustrated either way, there’s really no point in denying himselffantasies, is there?

So once Simmons finally gives up, Grant retreats to his bed andsettles in for some good old fashioned day-dreaming. She’s just offered him awhole new class of things to think about, after all—it’d be rude to ignore it.

First up on the roster: how Simmons might’ve tried to get someanswers out of him if she were a little more desperate. Now that’s the stuff dreams (and porn) aremade of.

“Yes,” Markham says patiently. “The Clairvoyant. He’s head of the Cen—”

“The Centipede project,” she says over him. “Yes, I remember.”

In his stoic way, he looks quite surprised. (Which is to say, one of his eyebrows raises a tiny fraction of a millimeter.) An understandable reaction—this is the seventh such ‘interview’ she’s held this week, and the first time she’s remembered any of the projects under consideration off the top of her head.

The Clairvoyant must have been warned of her general disinterest, by gossip if not by Markham, because he beams smugly at her.

“Caught your interest, did we?” he asks.

week forty nine drabble

I just can’t this week, y’all. This isn’t much, but I hope you enjoy. (Three weeks to go! I’m almost free!)

Though Jemma imagines she’ll never again be able to look at sand without some combination of disgust and remembered fear, there’s nonetheless something wonderfully soothing about watching the waves wash in and out along the shore. She feels as though she could sit here and watch it for hours...though perhaps that’s the company.

Will is tucked in next to her, slumped low on the wicker couch with his legs propped up on the coffee table. He’s long since dozed off - poor thing, his physical therapy wears him out something awful - but his grip on her hand hasn’t faltered. 

All of it - his slow, even breathing, the familiar weave of his fingers through hers, the weight of his head against her arm - is more than comforting. To have him with her, beside her, after weeks fearing him dead...there are no words.

The breeze is picking up, sending stray bits of sand swirling along the deck and prompting Jemma to readjust the blanket over her knees, spreading it to cover Will, as well. She could always just wake him, prod him back inside so they might warm each other up, but it’s so lovely just to sit here, she finds she doesn’t want to. 

Sunset, she decides. She’ll wake him to watch the sunset, as they do every night.

Until then, she’s content to snuggle in next to Will and watch the waves.
