Let’s scream about that forever! Verse 4 verse/ switch 4 switch relationships are so slept on in fandom.

Honestly I blame cishet women/ cishet folks in general for that.

I love that women are the backbone of so many fandoms (let’s be real, the myth of the fake nerd girl is garbage, women have always been the lifeblood of all fan and nerd communities everywhere), but the prevalence of cishet women specifically in fandom space and the centring of cishet women’s fan content is seriously detrimental to being able to find fanworks that don’t also centre heterosexual gender norms and sexual roles via the bottom/ top dichotomy.

Cishet women have really run with the bottom=feminine top=masculine stereotype and fandom is full of it as a result. And if bottom and top have essentially been translated into “who’s the man in this relationship” and “let’s impose cishet gender roles on this gay ship” then there’s no room for switching or for verse relationships because binary/ traditional cishet gender roles don’t leave room for verse folks.

It’s a real shame. And it’s a huge reason that I think we always need to centre lgbtq+ people who write about lgbtq+ relationships.

I think cishet folks and people in the closet should 100% have space to write lgbtq+ characters and ships, but I don’t think they should be the main people we celebrate and the ones we let set fanon norms RE gay ships.
