eddie probably should've brought something. his abuela would be on his ass for coming to someone's house for the first time empty handed but he didn't have time to stop by the store for a cake or some kind of desert because he left work late. he probably still smells like fire. technically, he has already been here before, to put out a fire, so he feels coming empty handed isn't too bad considering he helped make sure the place was still standing.

he looks around the beautiful home with a sleeping olivia in his arms. she's drooling all over his shoulder and snoring in his ear but he doesn't care. she's probably too big to be carried like this now but he'll do it for her forever. they're over for a playdate and for dinner but she's been falling asleep in the car, and not so much at night for some reason. eddie doesn't know why he called and he almost hangs up, fumbling with his phone a couple times and cursing under his breath before putting it back to his ear. opening up to someone that isn't buck will never be easy but this is a friend. he should be more willing to be open with the people he knows care about him. especially someone that might get it. he's just spent so long stuffing everything down until it blows up. he's tired of blowing up his life.

he's been at dispatch for a couple weeks now. it's not going too well and he doesn't know how to wrap his head around the fact that all the people he pulled out, isn't safe at all and is actually dead. he didn't kill them but by letting so many years go by without reaching out it practically feels like he signed the death certificate on every one of those bodies. he knows that's not how it works, but he can't stop his mind from going there. frank tells him it's survivors guilt, he just thinks it's bullshit.

he sighs and looks up at the ceiling. he's glad that he answered, is still alive, but now he doesn't know what to say, it all feels like too much or not enough. he's not one of the people that he saved but they did serve together. he feels stupid. " i pulled them all out and now they're all gone. no one here --- they all get it to a degree. we're all first responders but they don't get it. " he pauses. " did i tell you that i got shot ? just in the middle of the street. was already dealing with an insane case that day then i almost died. i quit being a firefighter, i've been at a desk at dispatch. it scared the kids but i think it scared me more. they're trapped on opposite sides of the house. there's more damage on buck's side than his, he watched most of the collapse fall around buck. on top of him. " yes, you can. " eddie is not giving buck an option because he has to move. they have an entire life to live and children to raise. there's so much left to have and he's not giving that up because of some house collapsing on them. dying in a house fire is not the way buck is going to go out. eddie won't let it.

he grabs anything he can. he tries to lift, push or kick anything in his way. they spent too long dancing around each other that he's not going to let buck die on his first week back after the shooting. right after they just finally got their shit together. buck saved eddie from the shooting so they can be together and eddie is going to save buck from this so they can keep being together.

the wood is splintering through his gloves and he can feel the fire on his back but he is no closer to getting to buck despite every attempt he makes to get to buck. " you gotta move because i'm supposed to marry you. " it's too soon to say that but he doesn't care. he's not going to regret saying it when buck is out too because it's the truth. he kicks another piece of wood and it breaks. he cheers despite how little it actually helps but it's progress. he grabs his hose and starts attacking the water behind him.

" but eddie takes a step back to look at the balloons he's already tied. he puts his hands on his hips and tilts his head because they look fine to him. they might be a little uneven but it's for a kids birthday party and it's not like the queen is coming. they're not even going to care about the balloons when they see the bouncy castle. now why did he tell caroline she could plan olivia's birthday party this year ? oh right, buck had to work. he sighs as he rubs his face and gives into the madness. this is going to be a long day.
