Changed Backstory: [ It wasn't known how often, but it was thought exceedingly rare that Asmodeus would ever engage one of his avatars in the creation of a cambion. But when a group of intruders were found examining his ruby-encased copy of the Pact Primeval, he crafted a new lock for its chamber in Tabjari... and had an intriguing idea about where to place the sole key. At a time when the absence of his other avatars would be least noticed, he sent one to a temple of his hidden in Elturel. He didn't reveal his full intentions, but did say the creation of this cambion would be important to his plans. A tiefling woman carried the child, knowing she would not survive the delivery and knowing it would be named Anung un Rama. In the intervening months, however, the hidden temple was discovered and routed by a group of Hellriders. She fled on horseback, and ended up giving birth in the Trielta Hills. ] — Early one morning, a rock gnome artificer named Tofiz Bruttenholm - called 'Professor Broom' by his peers and students - was on his way for a spot of morning fishing, when a baby's crying diverted him. He found a riderless saddled horse first, then the bloody scene of a dead tiefling mother and her child squalling amid her skirts. Fishing could wait. Even when the baby's stone right hand made it clear this was no ordinary tiefling, Professor Broom still took the young boy in, deciding to raise him and naming him Hellboy. — [ Asmodeus, meanwhile, had planned on his cambion being left in the Material Plane, as it kept the chamber key comparatively safer than being in the Hells. ] — Though Hellboy knew from childhood how different he was to his gnome father and neighbors, he grew up healthy and fairly happy, if somewhat isolated. He did feel self-conscious, despite his father's assurances, when their whole cottage had to be rebuilt to accommodate his growing height. Still, he enjoyed fishing with his father, helping to decorate for festivals among the community, and learning the artificer craft. His adolescence was difficult, though. Much as he loved his home, he wanted to venture further beyond the bounds of the Trielta Hills. His father hesitated, knowing that cambion children were often treated with suspicion or hostility, especially considering the nearest city was home to the Hellriders. As they both grappled with this quiet friction, Hellboy's desire to fit in was taken out on the only 'devilish' part of his appearance he could meaningfully affect (without drawing blood) - he started filing down his horns, more and more until he was keeping them at stumps only an inch or so past his skin. Once Hellboy had become an adult, literally towering over his community but willing and able to protect them with a custom firearm from his father, Professor Broom tried to accept he couldn't hide his son from the world forever. Hellboy found the new freedom bittersweet, and always returned home even when he'd venture away for days or weeks at a time. He did indeed experience some of what his father feared, yet he also found more things to love about the world too. Cats were a particular favorite. Sadly, no gnome lives as long as a cambion. After his father's funeral, Hellboy decided to set off adventuring. He still returns to his community in the Trielta Hills, but even less frequently than before, as his journeys took him further and further afield. He tends to set up camps to sleep rather than try to get an inn room, after too many instances of innkeeps or fellow patrons raising a ruckus. Still, he's cultivated a small but loyal group of friends, all fellow outcasts and orphans, and they sometimes travel as a party. — [ Asmodeus was privately glad to learn his cambion was nowhere near Elturel when Zariel dragged it to Avernus. ]
