In North Carolina and especially in the Triangle, there are many graduates of the universities in the area. I have respect and admiration for all of these schools, which have the allegiances of loyal tribes associated with them. This is about my tribe. As a youngster, I incubated strong ideals to keep me looking forward. At an early age, I became enchanted with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I knew that education would be an important road to a better life. When it was time to apply to colleges, I only applied to UNC. In my time there, I heard Shakespeare properly recited by my English professor, I took my astronomy lab at Morehead Planetarium, and I learned computer programming on the school’s mainframe. Also during my time there when I had no money or home, I spent the night in various campus locations including the library and the graveyard. More happily, though, I made lifelong friends who came to be like family. And I met Robin there in the fall of 1980. Though I was in school the same time as Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, and Lawrence Taylor, it’s the University’s history that matters more to me: that it is the oldest public university in the U.S.; that it opened when Beethoven was a young man; that our nation had only recently won our national independence; and that George Washington was President when Hinton James became the first student. We call the school from which you graduated your Alma Mater, which means "nourishing mother" in Latin. I'm thankful for the nourishment I received in Chapel Hill. #veryserious #gdtbath💙🐑
