Puppy Love Bucky Barnes X Reader One Shot
Little fluffy one shot because why not.
Summery - You work in a small town veterinary practice and get to know the hypochondriac, over protective puppy owner Bucky Barnes as he comes in frequently, convinced his service dog is seriously sick, and he thinks the cute veterinary nurse is a serious perk to his trips.
protective dog owner bucky!!! alllll the fluff.
“Y/N, we have a problem” the little bell above the old red door of the veterinary practice tinkered violently, as the heavy set man you had come to know as Bucky Barnes burst through it, covering the small reception area in a few steps and looming over the desk you were currently sat behind, looking rather startled you rubbed your bleary eyes and checked the clock on the wall behind his head, you shut in 10 minutes. You stood up brushing off your scrubs and pushing the paper work you had been working on to the side.
“What’s the problem, Mr Barnes” you asked with a small smile, you had a soft spot for the man even though he fiercely over reacted when it came to the health of his new service puppy.
“Well Cap just doesn’t seem right, you know? call it owners intuition but he had been sniffin’ around some awful suspicious lookin’ trash when we went for our afternoon walk, and he hasn’t been eating or drinking and he just kinda looks sad” The large man rambled on, clutching the small golden lab puppy in his muscled arms, the puppy was looking around in bewilderment and a look of concern imprinted on his features as his worried electric blue eyes didn’t leave his puppy, who looked very comfy snuggled up in his owners arms.
Bucky Barnes had been coming into your practice for about six months, every member of staff knew him by name and spoke of him with fondness. When he had first scuffled through the door everybody froze with wide eyes, the god damn winter solider was standing in your reception, with a small pup cradled in his metal arm and long chestnut hair falling in front of his face. But soon people realised he was a very polite, courteous, softly spoken man who was very paranoid about his dog getting sick. To date there was 24 official filed reports over six months of instances where Bucky had brought Cap in…
“His breathing is really shallow and it’s worrying me”
“He has this rash behind his ears that I have never seen before”
“I think he ate a piece of chocolate, I can’t be sure, is there any way you can check?”
“His bark sounds strange”
“Can dogs get travel sick? I think he might be travel sick, or maybe it’s a tumour. Oh god can you check please”
“I stepped on his tail and now I don’t know what to do”
You didn’t mind and he was always incredibly apologetic and thankful when you make time for his adorable pooch, always saying ‘it’s better to be safe than sorry you know?” and you guess it wasn’t an inconvenience that he was super hot, his attentive nature towards his dog only aided to the allure you felt towards him.
“Okay Mr Barnes, if you’d like to follow me and we’ll give Cap a once over” You assured, stepping out from behind the desk and leading the way into a small operating room, the robust man following closely behind, still cuddling his dog in his arms.
“Ah, thank you so much Y/N. I know it’s close to closing time, you must be so sick of me by now” he laughed slightly, using his free hand to scratch the back of his neck in an awkward fashion. You turned to face him and god the soft light of the operating room really did his features wonders.
“It’s not a problem Mr Barnes, better to be safe than sorry, you know?” you gave him a cheeky grin and gestured for him to put Cap down on the stainless-steel table in the centre of the sterile room. His face broke into an infectious toothy smile and you felt proud that you had caused it.
“Please, it’s Bucky” He reminded as you pressed your fingers tentatively along Cap’s stomach as he sat still for you.
“Well, Bucky you’re doing a great job of looking after Cap, he’s amazingly well behaved” you complimented, not taking your eyes away from the puppy’s stomach, continuing to prod lightly searching for inflammation, but out of your peripheral vision you saw a proud smile take over his features, and he pushed his hair away from his face slightly bashfully.
“Thanks, but if I’m being totally honest I think he’s the one that’s looking after me” He laughed and leaned against the door frame crossing his arms over his broad chest and watching you work. You felt your heart pang a little for this man, you know what he had been through, you know what he had lost hell, everybody that watched the damned news knew this guys twisted past, suddenly the over protective nature made complete sense, he just didn’t want to lose this little guy. You stood up a little straighter and looked over at him.
“Dogs have an incredible tendency to do that, don’t you think?” You gave him a knowing look and he gave you a slightly excited smile.
“You have a dog?” He questions, excited smile gracing his features and you laughed at his reaction.
“Yep” you replied, popping the P. “German Shepherd named Angus” you smiled fondly as you spoke of your pride and joy. “He’s a big goof” you added laughing and Bucky joined in.
“Cap and Angus should most definitely have a play date” he suggested with a cheeky smirk on his face and you felt your face flush a little, was he suggesting a date?
“We’ll have to wait until Cap is a little bigger, Angus would eat him for breakfast” you retorted, gesturing to the small puppy currently laid on the operating table wagging his little tail.
“Hey, don’t count out the underdog!” he protested jokingly, and you chuckled as he pushed his hair back with a muscled arm smirking slightly at you. You pulled yourself back into work mode for a second to deliver Cap’s diagnosis.
“Anyway, owners intuition was correct” you informed Bucky, tentatively scratching behind Cap’s ears as Bucky stood up straighter and his face filled with worry, you hurried to reassure him.
“Nothing to get too worried about, he’s just ingested some Poisoned Ivy, it sounds a lot worse than it is and all you need to do is induce vomiting, I’ll give you some medication for that. He might be a little lethargic for a few days but he’ll live, and hopefully learn to stop scavenging” you added the last part light-heartedly and walked around the table to wash your hands in the small basin, when you had finished you turned to face Bucky who had scooped Cap back up and wasn’t looking entirely convinced.
“He’ll be okay?” he questioned again, absentmindedly letting his metal fingers stroke the dogs soft fur, you pulled your eyes away from his fingers and blushed slightly. ‘You’re at work Y/N’ you reminded yourself sternly.
“Yep, just an upset tummy, he’ll be perfectly fine a few days and if he isn’t, well you know where I’ll be” you reassured him with a soft smile, his eyes met yours and he gave you a sincere smile, you ripped your eyes away and led him out of the small operating room and back to the reception, you quickly rounded the desk and fumbled for Cap’s paper work. While you busied yourself with this Bucky shifted on his feet, watching you intently.
“O-kay, this is one dose of apomorphine, crush it up and put it in a dog treat. Be warned he will vomit about 10 minutes after consumption so be prepared. Hopefully after that all the toxins should be out of his lil’ body” You handed him a small white pill bottle and your eyes met for the second time that night and it sent a small shiver down your spine, his eyes were so intense and soft as he smiled down at you, your fingers brushing slightly.
“Thank you so much Y/N, seriously you’re a god send” his eyes were still intently trained on you and you looked down and ‘pssh’d’ at his comment waving your hand slightly, you heard him chuckle slightly.
“Y/N, um can I have your number?” he asked slightly awkwardly after a beat of silence and you looked at him in confusion and before thinking, you blurted out
“I can give you the office number to call if you have any more problems with Cap” His eyes filled with humour and he sputtered out a laugh while you looked back with wide eyes.
“First time I try to ask a girl for her number in 70 years and it fails so drastically” he laughed out tipping his head back slightly his chest rumbled with laughter and startled the little puppy pressed against it. Your mouth made a perfect O shape as you realised what he was asking you blushed, putting your head in your hands you groaned at your own awkwardness.
“That never happened” your voice was muffled against your hands and you peaked out behind your fingers to see Bucky’s blue eyes filled with a playful glint staring back at you. You quickly scribbled your number down on one of the veterinaries branded post it notes before practically shoving it into his chest, trying to avoid his smirk. You said your goodbyes and you practically chased him out the door, his laughter still filling your ears as he walked away. You pressed your back against the door and let out a giddy squeak.
As you finally locked the door to the surgery and walked briskly to your car, you flopped down on the seat and pulled your hair out of its tight pony tail, letting it fall as you massaged your scalp. Just as you were about to start your car, your phone chimed letting you know you had a new text.
“Cap’s all good now, I’m even better. Thanks again for the help. Better safe than sorry y’know ;)”
