We just got back from Luna's appointment with the exotic vet. I was really happy to see such a knowledgeable vet this time, Wyatt & I were very impressed with him after seeing the regular vet a couple weeks ago. He was very informed about research and different methods & applications for some things I hadn't even heard of before.
Anyway, the vet we saw today seemed confident that she actually has a hernia! Because of where it is, how old she is, and how it felt to him, plus the fact that it hasn't grown noticeably since we first found it, he seemed quite sure it was a hernia & not a tumor.
We could have surgery done on her, but without getting into a long explanation of what he told us, it's probably unnecessary because there seems to be a low risk of the hernia turning serious, (which if that occurs we would also get her spayed at the same time because she would already be under).
If I wasn't in a bit of a tight financial spot currently I would have scheduled it just because I would like to have at least one of my girls spayed plus be 100% sure the hernia won't cause issues later, but alas. At least I know this vet could be trusted doing a spay, he said "rat spays are easy, you should never lose a patient if you know what you are doing."
He did tell us something very interesting about an implant that's basically like birth control, and it significantly lowers their estrogen levels/ risk of tumors. I will try and research this and a few other things he told us in a separate post, I just wanted to share the good news!!
-Luna was of course a complete angel the entire time & charmed the vet quite a bit. She seemed to like him & was trying to check out what he was doing as he was writing on the chart and messing with his hands (it was so cute) he didn't mind at all.
All in all it was a great vet experience.
