Veyadi & Sunai Age Meta

what we know*:

*page numbers based on english paperback

- sunai has a decade on adi (193)

- sunai’s body is in his early twenties (213)

- it has been 17 years since IF corruption (2)

let’s assume early twenties to mean 20-24. current sunai would be 37-41. therefore, veyadi is in the 27-31 range. because the quote is ‘something like a decade’, let’s assume 26-32. at time of corruption, sunai would have been 20-24. veyadi would have been 9-15. for more flavour, i think imaru is in her mid-upper 40s, placing her at 23-28 ish during corruption.

this opens up a lot to consider for sunadi’s differing perspectives. not only was sunai raised on lily where his parents were actively supplicants, he had enough years and maturity to see IF in a different light. whereas veyadi had perhaps not reached the age of skepticism and the maturity to see IF as anything but loving & parental. without even getting into how IF treated the two differently, their difference in age at time of corruption is so important to how they react to it. sunai has had the time to grow bitter and conflicted. veyadi was 10. or 12. or 15. of course he holds a different sort of grief for IF. and to imagine him somehow making it to chom dan, having to pick himself up and keep living, is so sad. these guys are so sad and every time i think about it harder i discover new detail that just makes it Sadder.

Been real busy with work and school lately, but I wanted to document the progress of what will be my semester-long project for my comics class 💜

I maybe didn't prepare a story ahead of time and need to do at least 10 pages, so I decided to adapt the first chaper of The Archive Undying by Emma Mieko Candon (@/emcandon)!

I also haven't had a dedicated drawing area set up in forever, so it's kind of nostalgic to be drawing like this. Anyways! This is my first take on Sunai (MC) and Veyadi; I don't have a ton of time to work on their designs so I don't get to tweak them to death and back, but they're close enough to my mental image for now. Some earlier sketches and illegible thumbnails beneath the cut!
