F-14 FUN FACT OF THE DAY #57

VF-124 Gunfighters, an F-8 Crusader fleet replacement squadron, was the first squadron to receive the F-14 Tomcat. The first F-14 Tomcat was delivered to the Gunfighters on October 2, 1972, two months after the squadron ceased training F-8 pilots.

VF-1 Wolfpack and VF-2 Bounty Hunters were the first two active F-14 Tomcat squadrons, established just 12 days after the Navy received their first Tomcats. They wouldn’t receive their first aircraft until July 1, 1973 following the completion of their training and wouldn’t achieve their total number of 12 F-14A Tomcats until spring of 1974.
