The Varrio Hicks St 13 (VHKS-13), Sotel-13 (SX3), and Spanish Gangster Disciples (SGD) operate as a shared alliance in Southwest Detroit’s Springwells neighborhood. VHKS-13 traces its roots to El Monte Hicks 13 in California, while SX3 (Sotel Trece) originates from West Los Angeles. Both are among the earliest Sureño-affiliated cliques to establish a Detroit presence, maintaining ideological ties to La Eme (Mexican Mafia).
Over time, SGD has become the dominant faction within this coalition, with Sureño influence still present but less publicly active. The alliance collectively maintains turf control in Springwells and is a primary opposition to the Latin Counts, particularly the Toledo Mafia Counts (TMC 5600).
GRAFFITI & TERRITORIAL MARKERS:
VHKS-13 tags often read “H13” or “HKS13”
SX3 markings include “SOTEL-13”
SGD symbols feature the traditional pitchforks and “XIII” identifiers
Latin Counts graffiti frequently crosses out GD and Sureño symbols, signaling ongoing turf disputes
The alliance’s presence is among the most visible Sureño–GD hybrid identities in Detroit, bridging older West Coast lineages with localized street influence in the Springwells corridor.
