Captain Jack Absolute in BBC Play of the Month: The Rivals (1970) (<watch here) Sadly, this one is not on dvd (or is it? Make my day? :>) but some kind person uploaded a vhs recording to youtube. (I need a tag for all those, there being so many.) If you can handle watching a film in that quality, it is SO WORTH it. And anyway, I don’t know if I could handle seeing Jeremy in tights in high-definition!
Here is my summary of The Rivals: I won’t spoil the story; it’s a cute comedy of manners. Jeremy’s first scene is adorable (spoiler alert but his personal assistant is shaving him, so cute). There is hardly a scene without him. His voice is the greatest; I know we ALL LOVE his voice, but he sounds out rather deliciously in this one! Captain Absolute’s emotions range from laughing to crying to growling and yelling and then laughing again, wowing me to tears. Hear how he earns the compliment from Mrs. Malaprop of being “the very pineapple of politeness” (which I’m sure is unrelated to how her dress resembles a pineapple upside-down cake). There is a cute fencing scene so you can check out his skillz. Last but not least, you have Jeremy Brett, quite fetching, in TIGHTS.
