Hi, I'm Soegiarto Hartono
......., though most people call me Markus.
I grew up around Kolintang, the traditional Indonesian xylophone, and have spent years exploring it as something more than an instrument. To me, it is a way of teaching, a tool for inclusion, and a bridge between cultural heritage and contemporary education.
Out of that work came two systems I eventually registered as intellectual property: the Directional Chord Symbol (DCS) System and Kolintang Hand Mapping. Both are designed to make music more accessible and multisensory for learners who don't fit the standard mold. In 2023, this work was recognized with Indonesia's National Cultural Figure award.
These days I administer Kolintang.id, a digital archive and teaching hub for the tradition, and I'm exploring questions around vibrotactile feedback, embodied cognition, and inclusive pedagogy.
This blog is where I'll share research notes, process photos, instrument documentation, and the occasional half-formed thought about why music education needs to think about bodies, not just ears.
