Quest’anno cade un anniversario molto importante a questo riguardo, infatti, seicento anni fa moriva il domenicano Vincenzo Ferreri, in valenciano Vicent Ferrer (1350-1419), la cui possente voce risuonava nell’Europa del tardo medioevo di fronte alla confusione più totale delle popolazioni decimate dalla peste, dalla guerra dei Cent’anni e spiritualmente sconvolte dal grande scisma d’Occidente.

A Miracle or Linguistics?
Saint Vicent Ferrer (1350-1419) is always credited with an amazing miracle: no matter where he went, people understood his sermons. How could people from other countries undestand him if they didn’t speak his language, Valencian?
Back then, it was seen as a miracle of God. Nowadays, we have a scientific explanation.
Vicent Ferrer was from the Valencian Country, and he always delivered his speeches in Valencian, no matter where in the world he was, and it is believed it was the only language he knew. For 20 years, he travelled preaching Christianity in Aragon, Castille, France, Switzerland, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Italy. So, how could these people understand him?
A part of the answer is easy: Valencian marks very clearly all the vowels and consonants (much more than the other variants of Catalan) and it is situated in the middle of the Romance languages spectrum. The Catalan language in general is "bridge language" among Romance languages, but the Valencian variety is the most clear. It’s also true that vocabulary, specially the religious one, is similar in all Romance languages and was even more back then. For this reason, Valencian was very easily understood by speakers of French, Occitan, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc.
But, still, one question remains: how could German, English, and Gaelic speakers understand him? For this question we still don’t have an answer.
