A champion at 2, Viceregal was named 1968 Canadian Horse of the Year. Despite soundness issues, he was undefeated in 8 races, including the Coronation Futurity Stakes and the Cup and Saucer Stakes
Hopeful for the Kentucky Derby, he was sent to America in early 1969. There he finished third in a minor prep race after injuring himself. It was his only career loss. It was discovered that he had broken a bone in his forefoot, and he was retired
Viceregal stood stud in several countries before being exported to Japan in 1978. He sired stakes winners Regal Bearing, Regal Gal, Regal Quillo, and Fairly Regal
