it started with one murder back in 2014; a body, found in maine with a small, handmade cross found a few yards away. another one, found in 2017 in the woods of new york, the cross made out of paper this time. later that year, it was vermont, with the wooden cross laid on a page from the bible. the new hampshire murder, not found until 2020, had a specific passage highlighted. and now, the latest - a mullen falls native, found only twenty miles away, with all the now familiar pieces falling into place to leave only one explanation: there’s a serial killer loose in new england. most people around town have merely read this news and moved on - after all, it could never happen to them. but there are others who are more curious - after all, the fbi has set up shop in the local police department, deciding that mullen falls is ground zero. there’s more to the story that can’t be announced, and a handful of residents who are now on a suspect list that only those involved in the investigation know about. that doesn’t stop the talk around town, though. the vices murderer, as they’re being called by the press now, could be anyone. like the owner of the vices bar - patty o’hare? or the local pastor, james foley? even beloved mayor, patrick hart is on the list - and of course, the local ‘bad boy’ whose been in and out of prison his whole life, eddie morgan, the top of most peoples list, not to mention several others. it seems like mullen falls is a town divided, for the first time in its history. half are obsessed, focusing only on the mystery that lays before them. the other half refuse to speak of it, to acknowledge it, to let it ruin their small slice of heaven. mullen falls is a safe place to live, after all, where people have called ‘home’ for centuries. and one little serial murder isn’t going to keep them from living their own lives.
