Happy National Vichyssoise Day! #food #foodporn #soup #vichyssoise #NationalVichyssoiseDay
November 18th is...
European Antibiotic Awareness Day - The invention of antibiotics is always listed as one of the greatest medical discoveries ever. People could now cure once-feared bacterial infections. In 1929, Sir Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic. The drug became widely popular after WWII. Some statistics suggest this “miracle drug” saved an estimated 200 million lives. On the one hand, it’s good news that antibiotics can cure so many different kinds of infections. However, on the other hand, people have become dependent on antibiotics. As a result, some people have become resistant to antibiotics. Superbugs have also made an appearance and are growing in number. These types of bacteria are highly resistant to antibiotics. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics accelerate resistance strains.
GIS Day - Geographic Information System… A simple three letter phrase that describes a system that has come to affect every aspect of our lives. From our GPS systems to Google Maps, GIS systems are integrated in everything and serve to make our lives easier every single day.
Great American Smokeout - This is an annual social engineering event to encourage Americans to stop tobacco smoking. The Great American Smokeout challenges smokers to quit cigarettes for 24 hours with the hopes that this decision will continue forever. There are benefits to 1 day without cigarettes. After just 20 minutes without a cigarette, the heart rate drops. So does the blood pressure. Twelve hours later, the body will cleanse the carbon monoxide from the last cigarette from the body.
Mickey Mouse Day - Commemorates the debut of a lovable mouse that was once a rabbit called Oswald. His character got his start on film on November 18, 1928, but before that, the story begins in 1927, when Walt Disney first sketched a floppy-eared bunny while under contract to Universal Studios. The events that unraveled brought us Mickey Mouse.
Occult Day - This day was established to encourage those who walk in the sun to take some time dancing in the shadows. Occult practices are not all dangerous paths and profane dealings with entities of dubious moral intent, instead they are a way to expand our consciousness and understand the part of ourselves that lives outside the material. Every culture has its mystery religions and occult practices.
Princess Day - Whatever our gifts, there is a Princess in each of us – even if you don’t know it yet!
Rural Health Day - Focuses on the medical resources rural communities offer and how it impacts small towns and their citizens.
Vichyssoise Day - Made thick with pureed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream and chicken stock, Vichyssoise is traditionally served cold.
World Pancreatic Cancer Day - The world turns purple in support of improved treatment, screenings, and research for pancreatic cancer and serves as a reminder to take action and help spread the word about the dangers of pancreatic cancer. The unfortunate truth is, pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all different types of cancer. Only 3-5% of those diagnosed survive for up to five years. Survival rates for most other kinds of cancer have gone up over the last 40 years but not pancreatic cancer.
