Gianna didn’t know how many ways there were to be exasperated with college freshman but she was all of them. She handed the drills over to another Summer to claim her break, and was flipping a throwing knife in her hand when she crashed right into someone.

“Could have hurt you-- Oh. Karnstein, hey.”

There’s a touch of relief. Finally, someone competent on this campus.

She makes no move to conceal the delight that writes itself into every line and plane of her face. Mattie has only ever tried to quell the things that needed quelling; this is not one of those things, and as a smile captures her lips and tugs their corners effortlessly up -- wards, she curls one hand around her sister’s arm with surprisingly gentle pressure.

As they spill out, the words don’t bely the desperate need that they conceal. It is integral to her being ( though, hers or the vampire’s she can’t say -- the distinction disappeared somewhere around her first century and she’s never looked back ), the thought of travel. And even the merest suggestion triggers something ancient and undeniable that refuses to be contained. Even if it’s expressed in something as childish as excitement.

          —- & she’s lost. W o n d e r f u l.           As  if  this  day  hadn’t  been bad           enough already.    Go on the trip,           they  said.   It’ll be fun, they said.           Broaden     your     aca-horizons,           they                                      said.

                    Never again would she put all of                     her faith in her aca-advisers and                     a              fortune             cookie.

          Regardless  of  whether  or not           she ever would again, she was           here now,     and there was no           turning back —- no matter how           much    she   might    wish    to.

                    Darkness         surrounded         her                     broken   only   by    the     yellowing                     sliver    of    the   moon   that   hung                     overhead.             To make matters                     worse,  there  was  something  that                     just seemed off about this campus.

          She didn’t know a soul here,    but           there was no time like the present           to                 change                that.
